Hey, Im new here so be gentle....

I was wondering what you guys think my best option is. Should I pick up
the new Artisan region 1 Larel and Hardy's or the individual Region 2
dvd's here in the UK....

(I can play both regions)

Universal Benelux in the UK has for years been dragging their heels
bringing out L&H DVDs. To date, there are only 4 to choose from. They
are good quality and include the best of their films, but if you
decide you want a complete set you can't go wrong with the DVDs from
Germany. There are 21 dvds to choose from and all the titles available
in the UK and the Artisan releases are available on the German disks.
Go to "http://www.blotto.nl/n/np/winkel/ekoopadressen.html" The
section labeled "Kinowelt dvd's (Original versions plus German dubbed
versions)" for a complete list plus purchasing links.

Although I have it on order, I have not seen the Artisan DVD yet but
the early reports are not good. You may as well not bother with these
when the UK and German products are so much better.

Unless you're buying the Kinowelt DVD's as well as the Vision Video
DVD's, you'll be getting the same films on the Artison release
(sources so far say SOTD isn't a very good copy on the Artison disc).

Vision Video does not have ANOTHER FINE MESS or COUNTY HOSPITAL on
their discs, so if you want a collection of 4 shorts plus the location
tour extra get the Artison. I know Kinowelt has all these shorts on
DVD.

Also, Vision Video's SONS OF THE DESERT goes horribly off-sync torwads
the end of the movie, where Kinowelts doesn't.

You can never have too much Stan and Ollie.

The British and German DVDs feature beautiful prints, uncut, most with
original titles, some with restored footage, and bonuses such as the
3-reel version of LAUGHING GRAVY and phonetically-spoken French and
Spanish features. Some of the films positively glow, and probably look
better than they have since they were first shown in theatres. Most of
Stan & Ollie's films of the '30s are available.

The Artisan release (one feature and a few shorts) has TV prints with
added music and inserted "fade outs" where the commercials went. TV
and reissue titles, rather than the original titles, are used.

Your choice, pal.

Thanks for the reply's. Iv always been a big fan of the lads. Now I know how to replace my old
videos. I think I will look into the German dvd's. Better prints than the Artisan release, the same
as the UK release + much more!

Is Vision Video's SONS the UK DVD? Because I have that, and there's no
off-synch problem whatsoever on mine.

Actually according to BLOTTO, the Dutch (or maybe Benelux, so Belgium &
Luxemburg, too) releases will be taken up again soon. Don't know about the
UK releases though. The first DVD (Laughing Gravy etc.) just happened to be
a common, nearly identical release from Universal UK, Benelux and Kinowelt,
then they all did their own thing. Fortunately, unlike Universal UK Kinowelt
did not waste any bits for the abominable colorized versions. Instead,
they've started with some later releases to add the occasional Charley Chase
film :)
Maybe the Dutch releases will correct the very occasional and minor
mastering problems with the Kinowelt discs (for perfectionists like Artvan
and me).
