Malcolm,
an IRP is an I\O request packet and is the method NT uses to communicate
between subsystems - espeically the file based ones. I would definatly rip
out \ disable the virus cheker as a first try

or

try increasing the available IRP stack size in the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System
\CurrentControlSet
\Services
\LanmanServer
\Parameters

IRPstackSize REG_DWORD 1–12 stack locations

Default: 4

Specifies the number of stack locations for I/O Request Packets (IRPs) used
by the Server service. It might be necessary to increase this number for
certain transports, MAC drivers, or local file system drivers. Each stack
uses 36 bytes of memory for each work item.

let me know how it goes either way.
thanks,

I just started getting this yesterday upon shutdown and today when I
accessed an LS-120.

I just installed Macafee antivirus 3.0.2 and was running some intense
Access 2/Word 97 OLE automation that caused me to run out of memory.

What's the cause?

Thanks for the reply. Something weird was going on with my newsreader
so I apologize for the multiple posts.

I had the same virus software on another PC with no problem but it
only happens when it's enabled so far.

You don't think it has anything to do with running Access and Word out
of memory then?

The McAfee VirusScan 3.0.2 Whatsnew.txt indicated that it now supports
NT4 SP3 but I really think they meant that they only tested it with NT4
SP3!
I was running VirusScan 3.0.0 with NT4 SP2 plus the kernal hotfix to avoid
the previous conflict between NT4 and VirusScan without further incident
(after the kernal hotfix was applied) until I installed version 3.0.2. I
can
now get these BSODs by simply attempting to ftp from the NT4 machine.
Problem is not recreatable with VirusScan deinstalled. The BSOD screen
listed MCFILTER.SYS as being involved. I am going to retest after bumping
the system to SP3+.

Update system to NT4 SP3 and reinstalled McAfee VirusScan 3.0.2.
Now I can ftp the same file without getting any BSOD failures.
