When I logged on to icq tonight Zone Alarm warned me that a file -
description:"patch"
name: externals.exe was trying to access the Internet.

On further investigation I found the file in Program
Files\icq\DataFiles.

Properties are as follows:

File size: 390 KB (400,312 bytes)
Created: 28 June 2002, 20:00:49
Modified: 26 June 2002, 17:00:00

Yes it DOES appear to have been modified before it was actually
created!

Name of signer is ICQ Ltd - no email address, no time stamp

Does anyone know what this file is?

TIA

Whatever it is, it is most likely NOT a true ICQ file. Just delete it.

i've had it too, blocked the access. Also "ft patch" wanted to access
the Internet.

Yes I had ft patch on the next log on to icq, after getting the
request for externals.exe to access the Internet. Since then: nothing.
Looks like Zone Alarm did a good job there! I'd stll like to lnow what
it is though!

I have another firewall but agree with you. One question: do you use
any patches to ICQ (banner-remover etc.)? It might be the cause

I use icqplus but that is the only add-on I have. Couldn't stand the
new icq hogging my task bar and icq plus gave me the option to get rid
of it. Whichever, someone has somehow dropped those files onto our
computers. I'd like to know who, and why.

Hi, same problem here with externals.exe and ft patch. I have no
patches at all, neither do I have an ad-remover or icq-plus.

When I logged into ICQ tonight it ran a file called externals.exe this used
all my CPU. I don't have a firewall, it ran in a console just moving the
curser around. I had to end task. Likewise I found the file in the
ICQ\DataFiles directory. I opened the file in a text editor and to my
surprise it was a html file renamed as an exe. The contents of the file
was:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<TITLE>403 Forbidden</TITLE>
</HEAD><BODY>
<H1>Forbidden</H1>
You don't have permission to access
/pub/ICQ_Win95_98_NT4/ICQ2002a/Data/ftpatch.cb
on this server.<P>
</BODY></HTML>

ICQ was most likely trying to download a patch but recieved an html error in
response, ICQ saved the html response as the exe file it was trying to
download and executed it as normal.

I experienced this tonight too. I've never come across icq doing
anything like this before, and couldn't find anything about this on
the ICQ website (albeit a half hearted attempt).

Would love to know what it is!

FWIW I have Norton Antivirus installed with latest definitions.

Any chance of someone from ICQ letting us know what this is to put our
minds at rest??

I contacted ICQ about this and they said that externals.exe and
ftpatch.exe were included in the icq distribution and their job was to
call home about the condition of the client and the network. they
weren't any more specific than this, and they didn't explain why these
exes have become active right now.

cheers
