ZoneAlarm shut down by Intuit

When attempting to register QuickBooks 2004, ZoneAlarm was shut down. In
disbelief, I repeated the process 3 times. Sure enough, Intuit has found a
way to shut it down with no problem. ZoneAlarm itself said "True Vecotr is
not running. Reboot" Why couldn't anyone else do the same thing?

Have you reported this to Zone Labs? We'd all be interested in resolving this.

One solution is not to use ZAP. It really is a poor quality firewall -- heavy on the bloat and graphics, light on the features and security/relibility as you are finding. Kerio presonal firewall version 2.1.5 (NOT the version 4.x release) is a much better product if you must use a software firewall.

Honestly, if you're on a broadband connection, invest $75-80 dollars in a hardware router/firewall. Once you set it up, only traffic you want will go out, and only traffic you want will come in.

What OS are you running?

If I'm not wrong, in W95/98 you can not prevent that.
On NT/2000/XP only Administrators can do that.

But, try, just to check, if you can reinstall ZA
AFTER you've registered QuickBooks.

Be advised that a variant of the CoolWebSearch trojan/spyware
impersonates quicken.exe (and also editpad.exe). Check if your
homepage or default search engine has been hijacked to
www.therealsearch.com. This trojan is also a dropper, which will
install other trojans.

Whether or not that's the case, try downloading and running
CWShredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip. This may
catch it if it's a new variant, because new versions of this trojan
emerge at least weekly.

If this really was the case (others have suggested alternative
reasons), you should complain LOUDLY to Intuit. Any program that does
this contains rogue code that should not be tolerated. Intuit has
already back-peddled on their security measures in TurboTax.

another nod for Kerio's v.2 stuff. i'm using it on all my home PCs. while
it takes more to get it going... it's better than these install and forget
firewalls.

true but not exactly true, if your system is compromised you can have
outbound traffic that the firewall will let back in.

it's always a good idea to inspect your firewall rules regularly, to make
sure everything the way it should be.

Using ver. 4.5.530.000. ZoneLabs has yet to reply.
I am getting a router. No question about it. Thanks for all the replies.

I DID complain loudly to Intuit. After about 30 minutes or so of
back-and-forth, they admitted that they did it and "that's just the way it
is" - exact words from Intuit.

Perhaps time to change vendors!

Hi,

I do highly recommend hardware routers, to provide an additional layer of
protection.

Zone Labs support is still pretty swamped so it may take a while to get a
reply. If you would like to help gather some information so that this can be
investigated, please send a copy of your post, to Submi...@zonelabs.com .
They can send you some information on what they need for this.

Oh, that's just lovely. I'm patting myself on the back for having
decided to file online rather than buying software. Viva la

Here is a report from ZL users forum:

A program that does that is deemed malicious in my book and therefore should
be removed promptly from any system. I suggest that you demand that they
either fix this or refund you.

Also, the program in its attempt to contact the internet without your
consent has failed, since firewall hardening is activated upon the shutdown
of the truevector service, so the program was not able to contact the
internet.
