Can a NetGear MR814 be used as a simple access point?

I already have a router for my DSL, but would like to add wireless.

The prices on teh MR814 are so low right now, I would like to buy it and use
it as a simple wireless access point on my network, completely bypassing all
routing functions.

Is this possible on this model?

I sure hope so! I bought one earlier this week. It arrives Monday. That
is exactly how I'm going to use it.

I'm 99% sure that it can. Just ignore the WAN port and turn off DHCP,
assuming the existing router is your DHCP server.

One thing I'm not quite clear of: The router defaults to the same local IP
address that my current router does. So I'll need to change the local IP
address for the MR814 to something else. But I'm not sure, when doing that,
if I need to put a MAC address for the MR814 into my current router so it
will reserve that local IP address.

I have an older MR314.

A second idea, you can set the WAN port for Ethernet and feed it into your
existing router.

It will take a few static routes, but it will work.

Of course, just using the LAN switch is cool too.

Yes it works. Just assign the LAN port on the 814 to an address in the same
subnet as your existing router, but not in the DHCP range of your existing
router. Disable DHCP, ignore the wan port, and you're basically done. This
is the exact config I am using right now.

I just got a MR814 this weekend, I'm devided on how to use it. I can
either replace my MS router with it, or use the MR814 as an AP on the
MS router. Doing the later will allow me to use the MS's hardware
firewall. Otherwise, I guess I should install a software firewall on
my system again if I use the MR814 only, which I don't look forward to
having another app running. A friend said just using the NAT on the
MR814 is good enough, but I don't really believe that.

Any comments?

I've heard there are reasons to have a software firewall running and not
relying solely on NAT. That being said, I've relied on NAT only for the
last 2 years. But I've also just invested in a software firewall to prevent
browser-based scripts from taking over.

On the original topic: I received my MR814 today. I disabled its DHCP
server. I set its LAN address to be outside the DHCP server range that the
current router has. VOILA - its working great.
