autofilter option grayed out

I have a spreadsheet that I use the autofilter option on.
When I opened it this last time, the custom options arrow
at the top of each column were gone. The autofilter
option was grayed out, but it was still checked. What's
happened? This file is shared.

I could get a greyed out Autofilter by having the worksheet protected. (And you
can't change protection in a shared workbook.)

I could get it if I had multiple worksheets selected (grouped).

If neither of these is true in your case, I've seen those dropdown arrows
disappear, too.

Sometimes (not always), minimizing the worksheet window, then maximizing
refreshes the display. Sometimes doing the same to the application window does
the same.

Sometimes closing and reopening is enough.

And sometimes, just removing the autofilter and reapplying will work.
