Does anyone know how to solve this. I have written a nice
Excel template that writes to an Access database that
does everything we want (job costing). However I wrote it
on my laptop with the intention of my colleagues using
it. I've emailed the files to them but we had great
difficulty in changing the target database from my
c:\documents & settings\my_name\desktop\ to something on
another machine or a server. We fooled it in the end by
creating an identically named path on the target machine.
Step 2 of the template wizard seems to let you change the
target database but the changes we made there are never
saved and activated.

You should be able to change the database in Step 2. I just tried it and it
worked for me. Make sure you are changing the .xlt file and not an .xls
file. In other words, don't use File - New to try to open the template.
Use File - Open and navigate to something like

C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\

When you've opened the template properly, the Title Bar should read
MyTemplate.xlt - make sure it says xlt at the end.
