Hi all,
As a few of you know, I found myself in financial trouble in the
autumn, and was unable to move to England, as I had been planning for
two years. The situation has left me unemployed and with the way the
economy in the US has been, things have got fairly bad.
I've been putting it off, but it's time to admit that I just don't have
the time or energy for keeping up with the projects I've started at WE,
in the capacity that I feel is expected of me. I'll still keep up on
the mailing list, and I'll answer any direct questions you send to my
talk page or email, but the projects are just too much. I can also be
found idling in the IRC channel.
The good news is that because WE are collaborative, neither projects
really need me, and I can think of at least one very capable
person in both the guidelines and the categories workgroups that are
more than capable of facilitating and guiding the efforts of the group.

Hi Jesse,
WE really appreciate your note. From personal experience, as one door closes others do open -- and more often than not, the scenery and journey is more rewarding than the closed doors behind us.
You will always have a place with the WikiEducator family -- take the time to focus on yourself and you can return when you're ready.
Your contributions to WikiEducator are recorded for prosperity. Thank you for all you've done so far and what you'll be doing in the future when you return!

Ha! Wayne, you make me feel like I'm breaking up with you. :P I'm
keeping my chin up, I think. I just don't want to make anyone feel
abandoned, at least not without explanation.

Jesse,
Keep in touch. Let me know of your situation so I can see if I can help. What is your career background? What part of the united States do you live? Don't tell me anything you don't want. I just want to help. I am a senior (old guy) in the Chicago area, a former college educator. I wish you the best. Keep in toouch.

Gene,
I'm a writer/student in the Chicago/Rockford area looking for teaching
assistance or copywriting work. My LinkedIn profile is at
http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessegroppi, my elance profile is at
http://jagroppi.elance.com, and my personal website is
http://www.jessewald.net. I prefer high school classrooms, and writing
internet and packaging copy. Ideally, the copywriting would be a
telecommute position.
That's what I'm hoping for, but in all honestly, there isn't anything I
won't do, right now. I do have some ability in web design and web
applications programming aside from these things, and I would do very
well in an administrative/clerical role.

Hi Jesse, Thanks so much for this post. I have learned so much from working on the projects that you started and have quite enjoyed our collaboration. But I totally know how life gets in the way. And wish you all the best for a more settled new year. If I see any opportunities that might suit your talents, I'll certainly send them your way.
You're right that neither project really needs you, but there's no doubt that WE miss you. I will most definitely miss your vision for what WikiEducator can be, your eloquent explanations of the technical side of wikis, and your ability to foster open collaboration.

Alison,
Thanks very much for saying such nice things. I can also say that
without a doubt, you have been a joy to work with, as well. You're
open to new things, quick, and dedicated. I look forward to working
with you again!
Jesse

Hi Jesse,
I'm so sorry to hear about your situation - but sorrier still that you didn't mention it sooner - perhaps WE could have helped!
One of my 'dreams' for our WE community, is to develop resources for folks in job search and career transition. In a former life, I was a job match coordinator, of a social service agency in Vancouver - coaching new immigrants and recent Canadians about how to get a job in a difficult job market.
I'm wondering if in the seeds of despair there isn't an opportunity here. What if you were to start writing about your job search on a page in the wiki, and WE as a community were to help you, share advice and perspective, leads and the like. It would be great if you could share your success and less than success....as WE're a learning community.
Would this be of help? (It might also keep you active in our community! <smile>
It could also become a model, for a job search / career transition approach or portal which we might partner with a community college or university - surely they need copywriters!
I'm also thinking about the connections to grassroots networks and organizations, where many folks are in a similar situation - might there be the kernel of a proposal to government or a foundation? I've talked a bit to Sam Rose about the power of local networks, and the transitioning of older manufacturing economies to social / collaborative and green economies.
Any thoughts here... others - what do you think?
- Randy
