Just spent the whole day at a workshop learning how to tie married wing salmon flies.  As I went to tie on the married wings, they promptly fell apart..think they were divorced or something, and the whole thing went shief ( kaput, south).  So, any hints on tying feather wings to keep them upright and not falling apart..I'd welcome them. I tried it  some time ago and had similar results. I think that a lot depends upon the suitability but not necessarily the quality or cost of the feathers.

The barbs have to go in the same direction to Marry them. The slips have to come from the same side of the feather I have not done any in a long time. If I can find some I did I will send photos to you.

I appreciate your input.  I am thinking that this will not be a regular thing for me.  Good to know, too time consuming and costly for a regular fly. Joyce

Thanks.  I was careful to have them coming from each side, right and left, as I married them, and they seemed to hold together until I lined them up, tips to tips, and then as I put on the first loop at the hook head, fell apart.  I was the only one of 6 not to be able to get my married wings together..so it was not the quality of the feathers. Hi Joyce, without sitting beside you it sounds like you failed to work the soft loop properly to pull straight down on the wings. If you have a copy of my thread booklet you'll see an illustration of this technique (if not let me know and I'll send you a pdf). Typically there is only a small section of each feather which is useful for marrying, particularly a specific length. The key is to practice with cheap feathers like turkey or goose.

Joyce,
I’ve married wings for salmon flies and for classic feather-winged flies- but only for non-fishing.  One fish and the wing is just mixed color barbs- unless you cement it together.

When I marry wings for salmon-flies, I cement the last 1/8th inch flat with tweezers as a tie-down point, plus let a small amount of cement travel up the barbs, which will be covered by the cheek feathers. Probably not what you learned in class, but it works for me.

the use of a touch of cement makes perfect sense.  Thanks. Joyce

Do any of you know a good resource to show how to do married wings?
Everything I have does not show how to put the feathers together.

It's in the pinch at the tie in point, it has to be firm, no twists or
curves and above the hook. When I first started my apprenticeship my
married wings divorced because i had the lower edge of the married wing
on the side of the hook similar to a feather wing streamer.

The other thing that can cause lot's of trouble is when you cut the
slips, the very edge folds up or down and then the Velcro hooks are in
the wrong position and they won't marry.

And practice, one of the best DVD's is Stack Scoville's or come see him
at the Sowbug!

I have tied the Twenty Salmon Flies, this is a well written and
illustrated but, starts simple and the final fly is 84 steps.

If you hold the feather up to the light, you will see a definite line between the edge and the quill. For married wings, the outer part of that feather is what is used. Saw one of the most beautiful married wing flies that I have ever seen yesterday evening. It was tyed by Terry Tanner for Vietnam vets. It had all the colors of the service medal married into the wings and the same colors in the body. I really can't explain it but it was to honor the vets that served there. I am sure Terry will have one at the Sowbug.
