i think in particular Sockethub can help as a tool to keep
communication federated (you would use it as an xmpp client to 1) your
own ("real") xmpp server, 2) gtalk, 3) facebook chat.
it is indeed ever clearer how important projects like these are, to
safeguard freedom of technology.
