Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there were any unhosted email web-application
projects in existence in one form or another, whether still active or
not?

Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,

Yes, i don't organize it into projects, but i write my emails from an unhosted
web app, and encourage everybody else to do the same. You maybe sometimes lose
a message or two, but otherwise, it's great fun! :) Not always receiving all
email also gives you an excuse when you don't feel like replying to something. ;)

I'm typing this one on the sockethub demo app, since my other two sending apps
(email.michiel.5apps.com and another version of it which i edit through
remoteStorage and keep on localhost) are both broken since i merged sockethub
upstream, and i didn't have time to fix them yet.

As you can see, this email doesn't have an in-reply-to header, and also the
demo app doesn't allow you to send to more than one recipient or send CCs.

Also, my app for receiving email is still separate from the sending one, just
because i haven't merged them yet. and it would be nice to add some addressbook
support so i don't have to memorize and type email addresses all the time.

Why were you asking, are you looking for an email app to use yourself?
Maybe we can join forces and share code! Also would be nice to get the email
app out of the "for geeks" section on https://unhosted.org/apps/ one day. :)

If you start from the Sockethub email demo tab, it should be quite easy to build
your own email app from scratch.

Cheers,
Michiel

All for merging efforts on a communication app. Email is just a more general case of messaging, and an important one to dogfood.

Hi Michiel,

Thanks for the message. Yes, I eventually do want to switch to an
unhosted email app, and although I was already aware of your email app
and the demo app I created for Sockethub, I was sending this email as
a more general ping out to the list to see if there were any others
who had either attempted something in the past, or were interested in
collaborating on a new project.

Although our demo apps (the Sockethub demo, and your email app) are
fine for proof of concept and very basic use-cases, I would like to
get the gears spinning on making a more user-friendly, robust,
attractive and well-designed messaging app. As neither of us have a
huge amount of time to spend on making something like that at the
moment, I was wondering if there was a front-end guy that'd be
interested in the subject, and working with me (Sockethub) to put
together a high-quality demo within the next month or so.

Not that our apps don't get the job done :) ... but there's a lot
more that would be needed to have something that could compete with
the web-mail services out there, so I'm hoping to raise the bar a bit
and get something high-quality out there. I need help though as I'm
quite busy already with the back-end work.

Cheers,
Nick
