sep's broke." mean ? I have seen it in other posts but have only now raised
my head above the parapet of ignorance to ask.

The convention seems to be -- above however you want to sign yourself. I
thought that was what I was doing

The sig-jihadin are complaining about the lack of single space character
after the two dashes. Highlight my sig with your mouse and you should
see what I mean.

That sigsep you put there ^^^ is correct, but OE strips out the trailing
space, so some shit newsreaders don't strip the sig.
