I've just had to take the decision to have my old moggy put down. It's
upset me much more than I thought it would.

Yes, he was only a cat. But he was my cat, I'd had him seventeen years,
and I'm going to miss the old bugger.

I need a hug.

Pets get to you. I still recall, clear as day, taking my border collie
to the vets and comforting her while she was put to sleep. Still find it
traumatic to think of, but she would have stressed if I'd not been there
to calm her, so I had to stay while the deed was done.

Shame. Still, good innings and all that.

I'd offer, but I doubt you'd be keen.

Or a couple of kittens.

Our two oldest are both 17 and the male is getting increasingly
ricketty. I'm not looking forward to the winter.

Sorry to hear that. Been there far too many times in the last four
years. Next to go will be Bart, who's now pushing 18. Seems to be fit
as a fiddle though, so hopefully some time left in him.

Sounds familiar. Mine was 17, but i'd only had him for 5 of those. Nice
old bugger. Daft as a brush, mind.

I was quite surprised how attached i'd got. Hence won't be getting
another ;-)

This attitude stopped me getting another dog after my 2 year old died.
Ten years later my mother pointed out that I was only upset because I'd
enjoyed his company so much.

She was right.

I got another rescue dog, and am glad I did.

Now when I think of my old dog, and how he died, I'm still a bit sad,
until I remember why.

The vets that did the deed to my beloved order collie had this really
cool policy whereby, if the cat or dog was a long-time patient, then
they didn't charge for putting them down, so as to avoid the trauma you
describe. They even had a separate, back entrance so that you didn't
have to walk out past lots of animal-owning folk on the way out, plus
you could then take the body of your pet away and, in our case, bury it
in your mum's garden, under a tree.

They even sent a condolence card a few days later. Damn civilised folk.

A tip...

If you DO do that, don't leave the body in a box under a blanket in the
back of the car, then lend the car to your other half, forgetting to
mention it.

It causes embarrasment when friends of said other half get in the back seat
and move the blanket.

I felt guilty when, the day after realising our cat was now 18 years
old, noticed here staggering around on her way out the door. She'd
been asleep, so I know she hadn't just been hit by a car or suchlike,
because that's what she looked like.

"It's either an ear infection or a tumour" said the vet cheerfully, as
she gave her the injection of antibiotic.

A month later, my toothless old cat is till going strong. It's the
dog, (Max the 11 year old Weimaraner) I'm worried about. We're off to
Canada for a holiday in a couple of weeks time, and I feel guilty
about leaving him ...

SO's surgery does the same thing, although the charging thing can depend on
circumstances. Some people bring the animals in to be put down because they
have become "inconvenient"[1]. In those circumstances the owner gets charged
full whack plus any "wanker surcharge" that can be thought of. At which
point the animal is taken out the back, put in a cage and a member of staff
inevitably adopts it :-)

One of my old cats, Bilbo, had to be put down as his kidneys had finally
packed in at the ripe old age of 18. So theres me, trying to be all brave in
front of the vet as I gave him a final scritch behind the ears and a tickle
under his jaw that he used to love so much, and burst into big blubbery
tears. I got him when I was 12, and such a large part of me finally growing
up was shared by that mog. Bless his ginger and white paws.. :o(

Ah, they get to you, don't they. I can't even read that _Rainbow Bridge_
thing. I know that it's emotional manipulation - and not wonderful prose -
but it gets to me every time.

My father was a little "luckier" with his last cat; She'd been fine up until
a week or so before she died, when she got very bloated, and visibly started
to fade. We'd worked out it was kidney failure - she was at least 18 - so
Pa decided that as she was still eating, drinking, and lying in the sun,
he saw no point in taking her to the vet, and I think he was right. I saw
her the night before, and she was able to rub my hand, and seemed quite
happy. The following morning, she went outside to lie in the sun on the
warm stone, Pa went and sat with her, and she burrowed her head in his
hand, and just quietly went. He buried her in the garden - she was much
missed, but I am very glad she went at home, with her people. I've never
been quite that fortunate, I've had to make the other choice three times.

It was a slightly obscure reference to the Monty Python undertaker

My two are 16 and 14 and I'm not having any more when they go. I
really mean it. No more cat hair, no more litter trays, no more
screaming to be let in at 4am, no more smelly cat food, scratched
sofas, dead and dying animals to tread in or chase. No more baby
sparrows that I have to convince the small are beyond trying to save

get back. No more cats.

I know someone who's got an endless supply of kittens wanting a home
because callous fools have dumped them at the marina right by where
she works.

Wait a while and if you want a kitten I'll speak to Jennifer, for it
is she who works by the marina and has phoned more than once urgently
seeking homes for very small kittens.

Please accept my condolences. I know how you might feel. I put down
our cat (4 yrs ago?) and missed him terribly, but it was the kindest
thing I could do for him. Sfunny thing, I kept catching glimpses of

This happens a lot, I think. And they find local "mugs" too, which is how a
friend once ended up with a three week old kitten. Brought in to the vet by
an Irish labourer - I was there! - who had paws the size of a meat plate.
One giant hand held this scrap of white fluff that he had found in the
gutter. I swear his bottom lip was quivering; he looked pitifully at the vet
and asked what he should do with the thing, as he'd no way of keeping it and
knew not how to care for it. Vet delicately took kitten, placed it in my
chum's hand, and said, "You've got six cats already, one more won't hurt."
She tucked not-quite-cat into her shirt, and took it home, to the relief of
all. It needed hand feeding with a bottle and formula kitten milk every
three hours, but could use a litter tray straight away. A very *small*
litter tray, made from a microwave dish. Rosie grew into the most
magnificent and enormous white cat you could wish for.

You need a new cat and I just happen to know where there is a semi stray
in need of a good home. Like a bag if bones it is and the folks looking
after it are about to move and sprog so they daresn't take it on full
time.

<w...@wicked-uncle-nigel.me.uk> saying something like:

>Yes, he was only a cat. But he was my cat, I'd had him seventeen years,
>and I'm going to miss the old bugger.

Aye; I miss both my mad bastards [1]- time for a stray to adopt us.

>I need a hug.

You need another Shit Cat, that's what you need.

[1] Jax, the mad one-eyed bastard wot got the big heave-ho recently
ended up going in style. The vet asked me if I wanted him cremated, but
that was too pricey and he was only a moggie, after all. I brought him
back with the intention of burying him somewhere here, but the 'garden'
is all still concrete until I finish the building work. Stuck for
someplace to put him, I stashed him in the wheely bin to avoid the
rodents getting at him with the intention of digging a hole in the
neigbouring field the next day. This would have been ok, except the bin
lorry came along a couple of days early that week.

He was in the recycling bin... I can imagine the utter disgust and
horror at the depot.

I'm sure when psychos that torch puppies and microwave kittens are
asked what possible satisfaction they could get from torturing harnless
animals, upsetting deranged old nutters like you has to be right up
there on the list of reasons.

You think cats can't be recycled? Look at "One Hundred and One More Uses of a
Dead Cat" next time you are in Waterstones.

17 years is a good life. He must have been well looked after by you.

My dog is a mere 14 years old and I know the day is coming...I'll be

The one that got me was when someone would drop a bit of food at the
table and I'd wait for the 4-legged vacuum to turn up and then realised
she wouldn't be turning up again :(

Other Muggy showed up last night and demanded a cuddle. He was on my
knee when the outside security light came on. I got up to let Oscar in
then remembered.

My last moggie passed away at a ripe old age around 2001. The sorrow
generated when a mate who has been by your side for 18 years passes on
is nothing ordinary. I resolved not to get another.

Oh hard luck sir - comiserations indeed. Presumeably the decision was

It was round about Wed, 23 Aug 2006 17:53:33 +0100,, when the famed
Bear was struck by a sudden insight:

>The vets that did the deed to my beloved order collie had this really

>they didn't charge for putting them down, so as to avoid the trauma you

Last horse we had to have put down was in the Good Old Days, at the
Avon Vale hunt kennels.
Paddy was taken there, stood on the lawn, one retired old hound
wandering around, "let go the lead rope" says the chap, and Paddy's
remaining days of pain were over.
He stayed there as well: recycling at its best.
