There was a thread about Ye Olde Traditional Christmas Meal earlier this
month, but I can't spot anything at the moment (mainly because I am
looking at thread titles as they originally started off; must move to a
decent Newsgroup browser).

Did anything become of the discussion? (apart from many ensuing, but
irrelevant, other discussions, obviously)

I have some suggestions...
And I'm not afraid to organise either!!

Seasonal regards (already),

Following intensive discussions (mainly with myself; and mainly not
about this), may I make a suggestion?

Would anyone be interested (or, possibly, more importantly) have an
objection) in meeting up late January for some food?

I was thinking of suggesting Lotus Chinese Floating Restaurant (near
Crossharbour DLR, East London), as recommended by Mr Fitzgerald, of this
parish. Pricing still to be establish, but possibly requiring a deposit,
which I don't mind letting my credit card company handle.

Ms Brace (et al), any particular weekends to avoid?? Would a Saturday
suit people (and I use that term in its loosest possible sense) best?

Well, I'm free tomorrow (Saturday), so count me in if anything
transpires! Don't use my home number as I'm not there (flat still
being redecorated) but my mobile works as per usual.

Me too, it's far too much of a faff trying to book anything this side of
Crimble now. Apart from that, we won't be here anyway.

Well if Ms Brace is to attend, I shall *have* to be there.

For the record I am starting to consider specific date(s). My opening
gambit: Saturday, 18th January???

I shall collect names (to book a table with the right number of seats)
later - but please email me or post here if you want me to include you
in the numbers, but you will be away shortly (and are likely to miss
this confirmation posting when it happens) [1].

For details about restaurant have a wander around:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Lotus+Chinese+Floating+Restaurant&ie=UTF
-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

N.B. Have already spoken to restaurant and they are currently drawing up
a new menu for the new year so I can't post that, but also they do not
think that there will be a problem with seating us.

I should hope so, we're only off for 10 days, although......

Unfortunately, that could be a bad weekend as I've already spoken for my
rest days earlier in the week. Put us as a provisional for the moment
and I'll work on it.

Would the Saturday, 1st February be any better? (or cause problems for
anyone else?!)

If you want Chinese don't go on February 1st unless you wish to be right in
the middle of Chinese New Year celebrations, with the congestion, queues, and
otherness that causes in Chinatowns everywhere...

Otherwise, fine by me.

Anyway. LONDON, 18th JANUARY.
*EMAIL ME or post here* (preferably within the next week, for guidance,
but don't worry too much if you are later than that) to make sure I can
book us all a table.

Time still to be decided, but probably AROUND 7pm at:
**Lotus Chinese Floating Restaurant** (near Crossharbour DLR, East
London).

And the resultant email which was sent to various addresses which I had,
was:

Dear Entity,

This is an email to update you about a particular goings-on in uk.glb.
And if that first sentence makes no sense don't worry as I've probably
mistyped an email address or something, so feel free to have a browse of
this email, then just press "delete" if it doesn't interest you!

Anyway. On to business:

London, Saturday, 18th January, 2003.
The uk.glb Christmas Meal (2002 edition)

8pm at the Lotus Chinese Floating Restaurant,
38 Limeharbour, Inner Millwall Dock, London, E14 9RH
nearest station: Crossharbour (& London Arena) DLR

Predrinks at Slug and Lettice, very near Canary Wharf Jubilee Line
station from 7pm, leaving 7.30pm(ish) to make our way over to
Crossharbour.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO: I shall be booking a table, so please email me
(preferably by 31st December) to make sure that you are included in the
numbers (and let me know the number of any guests that you are
bringing).

Kindest regards,

>Predrinks at Slug and Lettice,

Thank you very much for arranging this Paul; at least we got there in
the end, even if fourteen months after Steve's initial suggestion:

There was Gavin, Laurence, Lloyd, Graham, Ian, paul, Chris, Steve, John,
Christopher, Bryan, Martin, and PaulG round a table (sans Claridges cat)
all making for an animated and convivial company. There were the usual
misconceptions, but with convivial company, a generous menu and copious
wine they soon passed into memory.

I really enjoyed the evening, but must apologize for not having got
round to chat with everyone; the table's position didn't really make
for successful chair-hopping, but hopefully the lapse will be put right
soon.
