Hammerite, load of crap?

Had an old garden gate I've been repainting, decided to use Hammerite
smooth.

What a mistake, forgotten how much I disliked this stuff. Thick, splodgey,
impossible to apply thinly and near impossible brush the subsequent runs and
sags out.

Gotta be some better metal paint out there, surely?

Got another gate I've got to paint up and don't want a repeat performance of
dealing with splodgey runs and sags.

Would an aerosol spray be a better idea?

Your mistake is psychological, or perhaps semantic. You are thinking of
Hammerite as paint.

Incidentally does anyone remember the USSR female shot putter, Slapabita
Ameritonit ?

That's your mistake, it doesn't "brush out" to a thin coat. Slap it
on and leave it.

That's slapping too much on. B-)

I find the bigest problem is tiny bubbles, they leave pin prick holes
in the covering. You really do need to apply two coats but with the
xylene based stuff there was a fairly narrow window for the second
coat otherwise you had (supposed to) wait several weeks IIRC.

Dunno, I like Hammerite. We did our gates 6 years ago with the stuff
and yes it could do with a few touch-ups but essentially it's fine!

I found that it was better to slap it on and forget about it, the sags
evened out for me .. but it was _essential_ to properly clean the metal
it was being slapped on to.

I've found it's hopeless for rustproofing due to those holes... each hole
turns into a blister (even after 2 or 3 coats within the recommended time).
I've switched to using Galvafroid (zinc-based primer) where I haven't
actually got around to a finishing coat yet, just 2/3 coats of primer.
After a year it's not showing bubbles or rust stains at all.

I actually used Zinc182 as a primer coat, then applied Hammerite to it as a
top coat.

I need to top coat another gate, any suggestions on what to use.

Splendid red oxide primer that really works. It can be applied to
rusty steel and, ISTRC, can be overpainted with Hammerite.

Painted my trailer with it some 10 years ago and haven't needed to
repaint it. No rust showing anywhere. I did try to overpaint it
with New Holland bright red tractor paint - but it fell off so, maybe
it can't be overpainted with Hammerite!

It can even be overprinted with cellulose paint, the dogs danglies of metal
primers.

pond sealant but not the primer.

Can't recall seeing it in the shops, anyone got an on-line source? (Yes
I know, I could phone the makers tomorrow....)

try Google, but just about every boat chandler stocks it.

Bondaglass are what you might call old fashioned. They have their niche
markets and they stick to them.
IIRC they used to supply London Underground with the white paint for the
platform edges.
