Semi-OT: Disney buys Lucas

though I think it means Lucas is done producing big budget stuff.

You seem to have missed the other part of the headline. They are
producing Star Wars Episode 7 to come out in 2015. I haven't seen any
word on whether this will be a whole new story line or will follow any
of the story lines in the myriad books that have come out in the past
few decades.

First word from Lucas in a video interview at starwars.com
is that he has story treatments ready for 7,8,9 films. He also
said something about "we already have hundreds of novels,
comics, video games, etc which might be material for
future films". I'm guessing he means episodes 7,8,9 will
be original while future films or TV shows could be based
on the other existing material.

He always said they were in his head, but apparently part of the deal with Disney was they demanded he put them down in writing to better ensure the franchise's survival

I don't have as much of a problem with this as most people, I think.  Part of it may be that I don't think Disney can do anything to devalue the franchise that Lucas himself hasn't already done in the name of "family entertainment" (hello, JarJar!)  But mostly because Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel, plus their long-term treatment of Pixar ("Cars 2" not withstanding) shows that the current management understands when to let subsidiaries run semi-autonomously.  

Plus, what's the real danger here?  Theme park rides? We already have those. Stormtroopers with Mickey ears? They already exist too.

Though the Indiana Jones movie rights are still tied up with Paramount. (Much like how Sony still has the rights [and negotiated to keep the rights] to producing the Spider-Man films, and Fox with the X-Men films,)
