SportsTV: Monumental snows in Buffalo threaten NFL game

The first two blog posts on this page at NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk site (link) suggest time (as late as Tuesday?) and venue changes (Detroit?) for the NY Jets-Buffalo Bills matchup originally slated for 1PM Sunday (23). Decision coming Friday.

ESPN.COM is reporting the game will likely be moved temporally and spatially:

"Coaches for the teams are preparing with the belief the game will be moved to Monday evening in [Pittsburgh, 215 miles away, Detroit, 256 miles, or DC, 389 mile]. The Bills have been unable to practice for the past two days and will have to leave Buffalo to do so."

Also:

"Bills officials said Wednesday that it takes about three days to remove one foot of snow from the stadium and surrounding areas. At the rate the snow is falling, that cleanup would take 18 days."

Mind you, the offer is in spite of a government order to remain off the roads until further notice, so the idea that the Bills would ask their fans to drive to Orchard Park to bail them out to collect that sweet, sweet gate, concession, and parking revenue is so very National Football League (PROTECT THAT SHIELD!).

I believe this is SOP (minus the much more valuable game tickets) in Green Bay.

The game has been rescheduled for Monday at 7 ET in Detroit. The crawl I saw didn't mention television.

Which begs the question - why Detroit and not MetLife? Or, for that matter, why not the Carrier Dome?

Precedent would be for it to air (only) on the CBS affiliates in Buffalo and New York, plus on DirecTV for NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers.

To clarify, I mean Buffalo and New York City. WIVB and WCBS.

My guesses:

Carrier Dome is too small and doesn't meet NFL standards. MetLife has the Giants at home Sunday night, which would require quite the flip. The Lions are at New England, and Detroit's done the last-minute thing before (after the Metrodome roof collapsed).

Buffalo officials would most likely not want to play twice at a divisional foe in a season -- even if the first result was a 20-point win.

Looking at the Carrier Dome schedule, there's a tripleheader of hockey on Saturday and a basketball game on Tuesday. I don't know how much turnover time SU officials need to change the floor.

Plus - CBS was going to Detroit anyway on Thursday for the Thanksgiving game - looks like they will use the same crew for both games.

The pundits would be at the league's door with torches if NJ were given another home game.

Meanwhile, some media have noted a sentimental connection -- the late Bills owner Ralph Wilson, for whom the Buffalo park is named -- grew up in Motown.

For the Carrier Dome, there would be some different lines that need to be put on the field for an NFL game. The hashmarks are different, most notably, but I think there are other slight differences, as well. I seem to recall that when Seattle played some games at Husky Stadium - when the Kingdome was unusable - that it was supposedly quite involved to get the field set up properly.

Adding to Brad and John's very accurate description: as someone on another thread noted, the Carrier Dome is not wired for the NFL Replay system, which now involves going to NYC.

Pitt and the Steelers often play on consecutive days at Heinz Field, and about the only things they have to change are some field markings and the signage around the field. There are other cities where college and pro teams share a stadium (Philadelphia comes to mind). Joe's point about wiring for the replay system makes sense (it's something that could be installed at a new venue with enough lead time, but probably not in less than a week). And it's possible that some of the suggested NFL stadia have events scheduled for club lounges and the like that would be difficult to reschedule on short notice.
