Is setuptools broken?

Please see the details in the following thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/turbogears/browse_thread/thread/ba4a2b2666e4ca51

As stated in the first post, the link to ez_setup.py is broken.
However, 0.6a10 did install for me, but with an error. When I revert to
the last dev version I had installed, everything was okay, but for some
reason 0.6a10 was made a dependency of the TurboGears intall, so I'm
sure I won't be the only one to have this problem.

...the answer seems to be: only in Windows. Why is 0.6a10 necessary as
a dependency?

Just to make sure, I got rid of the older setuptools dev version,
renamed easy_install.exe in the "scripts" folder, and tried again.
Everything installed smoothly (including the troublesome .exe file)
using ez_setup.py -U. However, attempting to upgrade any package
results in a message similar to the following: **********-.py2.4.egg is
already the active version in easy_install.pth, listing the last
version I installed rather than the version I'm trying to install. And
yes, I'm providing the correct path for easy_install. Reverting to the
old version corrects the problem, but this is definitely a problem!!

The message you received,

"**********-.py2.4.egg is already the active version in easy_install.pth",

is generated because pointers to the old eggs are stored in a file called "easy_install.pth" located in "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages".  If you want the newer eggs to auto-install, you'll have to delete the relevant entry from this file.

Wrong!

That's funny, I experienced the same thing and what I described earlier fixed my problem.  Sorry it didn't work for you (you might also want to delete the old egg files along with the entries in the easy_install.pth file).

For example, easy_install -f
http://www.opensource4you.com/nightly_tarballs.shtml paste works in the
older version, but not 0.6a10. What is different? One works, one does
not. You be the judge...

Isn't manual deleting of the old files counter-productive to the idea
of setuptools? I've been using it for quite some time and have NEVER
had a problem before.

Yes, it's counter-productive, but if that's the only way to get it to do what you want it to do, then you're stuck until it's fixed.
