I have read a post on this topic before, and made a failed attempt to
resolve it. Whenever I try to save in firefox the computer tells me

A script from "file://" is requesting enhanced abilities that are
UNSAFE and could be used to compromise your machine or data:

Run or install software on your machine

Allow these abilities only if you trust this source to be free of
viruses or malicious programs.

So I realise its an issue of security, privileges and I am aware of
the sites http://icanhaz.com/firefoxprivileges and http://firefoxprivileges.tiddlyspot.com/
through a previous post I've seen. But after that I get lost and
ineffective. I want to use firefox but at least with internet explorer
you don't get this complicated problem. Can someone walk me through
what I need to do to get this fixed.

Hi Johndb

I just had to "Allow these abilities" once - After that it worked/
saved as it should.
A direct link to a wizard if you cannot make it work the simple way
(just allowing firefox to use enhanced abilities)-

The best way is to go to http://icanhaz.com/firefoxprivileges and drag
the privileges Bookmarklet to your Bookmarks Toolbar.

The first time you use it, it will install a new tab in your backstage
named Security. (As of this writing the above site seems to be down.
If it stays down, download the plugin from the other site
http://firefoxprivileges.tiddlyspot.com/ and use it to set the
privileges)

Thereafter when you try to save your TiddlyWiki and you get the
Firefox security warning open backstage and click the security
button. It will open a popup named Manage Firefox Privileges.

The first two items will be ticked by default as below. (You may have
to allow the security warning once more but after doing that go and
set the privileges, note that action too may trigger the security
warning so allow it again.)

(ticked) Grant rights required to save to disk (Run or install
software on your machine - UniversalXPConnect)

(ticked) Grant rights required to import tiddlers from servers or
access TiddlySpot (Read and upload local files - UniversalBrowserRead)

Now at the bottom of the popup there are two buttons 2. Set privileges
3. View privileges

Click the button: Set privileges. This should from now on allow you
to save that particular TiddlWiki in its location without triggering
the security warning. (The View privileges will show you all of the
TiddlyWikis that have been allowed and their locations.)

NOTE: This must be done for each TiddlyWiki you work with. Note also
that if you move the TiddlyWiki to a new location on your disk the
privileges must be reset. Likewise any extension of the TiddlyWiki
name i.e. such as a #Permalink will also trigger the Firefox security
warning and must be reset. (Removing the permalink before trying to
save should allow you to save without creating more privileges)

Let us know how you go. Also continue this dialogue with myself or
others until you are satisfied.

Okay so first I download the html file at the manage firefox
privileges site and an interface to manage per-file privileges in
Firefox section right? So that downloads and opens up the manage
firefox privileges page as a tab on my firefox browser.
It doesn't install a new tab in my backstage named Security, how to I
achieve that.

Also you mentioned that other site http://icanhaz.com/firefoxprivileges
being down, what is the alternative route is it the "How to for
TiddlyWiki Users" section on the manage firefox privileges site. I
have to say I think that site is confusing. Which step do I take
there?

Also you mention drag the privileges Bookmarklet to your Bookmarks
Toolbar. But on my tiddlywiki page I don't have a bookmark toolbar.

I agree the site is very confusing I struggled with it also. Using
as you have is also confusing. I suggested using the plugin but it
isn't easy to find either so I provided a link below. Forget the
download you did and use one of the options below.

I have given both options and either will install the security tab in
backstage. The bookmarklet is preferred because it is available to
any TiddlyWiki showing in your browser and doesn't need installation
in the TiddlyWiki.

Option 1 Plugin
Go to the following link and copy the FirefoxPrivilegesPlugin. Put it
into edit mode, right-click then 'select all' and copy and paste it
into a new tiddler in your TiddlyWiki. Name it
FirefoxPrivilegesPlugin and tag it systemConfig. Save and and
reload.

This will automatically install a tab in backstage named Security.
Clicking this tab will bring up the Manage Firefox Privileges where
you set the privileges at the bottom.

http://firefoxprivileges.tiddlyspot.com/#FirefoxPrivilegesPlugin

Option 2 Bookmarklet (Preferred)

Go to:
http://tiddlytools.com/#InstantBookmarklets

Near the bottom of the list there is the Firefox Privilege Manager
bookmarklet. This is what you drag to your Firefox BookMarks Toolbar.

If your Bookmarks Toolbar is not visible then go to the top menu on
Firefox and click View > ToolBars and tick Bookmarks Toolbar.

Click and smoothly drag the Bookmarklet from TiddlyTools to the
toolbar. Now no matter what TiddlyWiki you are using (while it is
showing in the browser) simply click the Firefox Privilege Manager
button on the toolbar to set the privileges. From then on you can use
the backstage security button if you move it.

Let us know how you go.

Your sequence of steps in option 2 is drag to Firefox BookMarks
Toolbar then you say drag the Bookmarklet from TiddlyTools.
TiddlyTools is that just an alternative name to ignore or a step you
omitted.

I've attempted option 2, there is a hyperlink on http://tiddlytools.com/#InstantBookmarklets
that says Firefox Privilege Manager, and when I click on it a window
pops up and says "TypeError: this.toolbar is null". Anyway I moved
this to my toolbar, and when I click it I still get the error message
and there's no security button. If you've nothing more to add for
option 2, I will attempt option 1 and report back.

Thanks for your help.

If you carefully read the first paragraph where it mentions the
bookmarklet it is explaining what you are be going to be doing - it is
not a step. The action to be preformed is in the last paragraph. I
should have numbered the steps.

> I've attempted option 2, there is a hyperlink onhttp://tiddlytools.com/#InstantBookmarklets

You are not supposed to simply click on the bookmarklet in at
Tiddlytools you are supposed to "click and drag" to the bookmark
toolbar.

If you do click on it you should get that error since TiddlyTools
normally has 'Hide editing features when viewed over HTTP" enabled and
this will trigger that error. Besides, the bookmarklet would be
trying the set the privileges for TiddlyTools and that is not what you
want.

NOTE: The error "TypeError: this.toolbar is null" will also be
triggered when a normal HTML page is showing in the browser when you
click on the bookmarklet toolbar button. It intended to only work
with a TiddlyWiki.

It should work properly when the local file: TiddlyWiki that you want
to set privileges for is being displayed in the browser. Then it has a
chance to install the security tab in the backstage

Keep us informed.

Okay I've succeeded in getting the Firefox Privilege Manager on my
bookmark toolbar. For some reason now when I
click on it the security tab is working and appears unlike previously.
Anyway I'm having trouble with the next step you outlined earlier.

>Now at the bottom of the popup there are two buttons 2. Set privileges
>3. View privileges

>Click the button: Set privileges. This should from now on allow you
>to save that particular TiddlWiki in its location without triggering

So in the security tab I can click on the 2. set privileges window,
fine, and within that window there is another button at the bottom
that says set privileges when I click that I get the message "Not
enough privileges. Maybe you are trying this from a tiddlywiki loaded
from a server?" so I click okay. The 2 default "grant..." boxes are
ticked. Additionally on 3. View privileges, it tells me "Error: Error:
A script from "file://" was denied UniversalXPConnect
CapabilityPreferencesAccess privileges." below a "3. Granted
privileges area" heading.

And when I try to save an edited tiddlywiki I get a "Failed to save
main TiddlyWiki file. Your changes have not been saved."

So where do you think I should go from here.

Hi John,

I've done this on more than a dozen TiddlyWikis with no problems. I'm
really at a loss now.

Perhaps the TiddlyWiki you are trying is causing the problem somehow.
I can only suggest now that you download a new TiddlyWiki and go
through the procedures again. Maybe now you know the procedures you
can try a clean start.
