Thank you, Eric!

A year ago, two trends converged to discourage me:  The Great Browser Crisis of TiddlyWiki, and my own favorite wiki documents becoming to large and slow to handle.  Thanks to you and others, the G.B.Crisis is gone (although I still have psychological scars and some technical knowledge I never asked for).

As for my documents, I've found solutions and work-arounds, and decided I don't need so many plug-ins ... who knows, maybe I'll be able to get some more RAM someday.

In summary, I can breathe again.  Thanks!

A Minor Criticism about Presentation

The Downloading tiddler in 2.8.0 does not include references to Windows 7, Window 8, and Chrome.  That tiddler is the first place to which a TW Newbie is directed from the opening screen.  I think prospective users would conclude from the current content that TW is a stale project.

Hi Eric,

Many thanks for the great saving additions.
I tried your suggested steps:
1) go to http://www.TiddlyWiki.com
2) edit a tiddler (just add something to HelloThere)
3) press "save changes"
and yes I could download/save it.
But I noticed some character encoding problems:
- '© 2013 UnaMesa' in the Main Menu shows as '© 2013 UnaMesa
- 'options »' in the Sidebar shows as 'options »'

Windows 7 64-bit
Firefox 21.0 (char encoding UTF-8)

Cheers,

Ton

Awesome! Any idea why my 2.7.2 tells me it's already upgraded to the latest version when I try to update it?

oops! There are still a few manual steps involved in posting a new
update to TiddlyWiki. One of them is to put the latest TWCore in the
right place online for the "upgrade" process to find it. It should be
fixed now.

Eric,

I have a Serious problem exposed with TiddlyWiki 2.8.0 in a special case ?

I think it important to report something here but I would understand that it may not be fixable at this stage. As posted by myself on a number of occasions I have been getting FireFox Abends - Closes Firefox when selecting Save Changes (Latest FireFox/TiddlyFox and earlier versions) - the problem is before 2.8.0 this may or may not happen on any save and it seems the longer the period without a save the more likely it will happen (When more is to be lost). This has been a wicked problem for me and I have tried to resolve it with all combinations of FF browser and plugin elimination.

Since installing 2.8.0 this problem is now repeatable because without TiddlyFox enabled it happens on every save.

Disable TiddlyFox Save Changes, Download over Dropbox copy from which it was loaded abends FF, Reopen FF File not found - Firefox can't find the file at /b:/TiddlyWiki/MasterDBV4.htm - File was deleted.

Disable TiddlyFox Save Changes, Download to new location from which it was loaded abends FF, Reopen FF file was Not deleted.

This means should the local file save fail care of TiddlyFox, the fall back (new 2.8.0 code) is now a guaranteed abend of FireFox) for me.

This is not occurring with the minimum test case !

I have disabled all Plugins containing netscape.security, From netscape.security.PrivilegeManager.enablePrivilege('UniversalXPConnect');
including QuickEdit one of my favorite plugins but sadley the fault is still occurring.

Request
Given you are currently knee deep in the save code of tiddlyWiki could you please advise what plugin code could be interfering with this process and causing abends? I will then search for this code and disable plugins to see if I can eliminate it.

I will undertake another plugin disable and reenable elimination process because at least now the problem is predicable (assuming its that same).

Excellent news that you can now repeat the problem reliably. When you say that the crash isn't occurring with the minimum test case, do you mean that you don't get the crash if you disable all the plugins in your document?

Best wishes

Jeremy

Jeremy,

This is so Frustrating. My Last elegantly composed response seemed safe because by disabling various plugins I had found a potential subset of plugins that may be the cause of an immediate abend, I could save my tiddlywiki. Unfortunately before posting I though I would save my notes to you and once again abend.

I will re-post from one I will write in Notepad first - shortly

If tiddlyFox is loaded it will save, but on occasion, after a period and some saves it seems to revert to the new code and abends
If TiddlyFox is not loaded then my MasterDBV4 tiddlywiki seems to revert to the new code in 2.8.0 and abends

The currently active plugins in MasterDBV4 are
    AliasPlugin
    BreadcrumbsPlugin
    CalendarPlugin
    CalendarPluginConfig
    CheckboxPlugin
    CommentPlugin
    CookieJar
    CookieManagerPlugin
    CopyTiddlerPlugin
    DatePlugin
    DatePluginConfig
    EditSectionPlugin
    FootnotesPlugin
    ForEachTiddlerPlugin
    FramedLinksPlugin
    GotoPlugin
    HTMLFormattingPlugin
    HideWhenPlugin
    HoverMenuPlugin
    InlineJavascriptPlugin
    InlineTabsPlugin
    InstantTimestampPlugin
    ListboxPlugin
    MptwLayoutPlugin
    MultiTagEditorPlugin
    MyCommentPlugin
    NestedSlidersPlugin
    NewHerePlugin
    NewMeansNewPlugin
    PartTiddlerPlugin
    PopupMacro
    QuickOpenTagPlugin
    RecentChangesPlugin
    ReminderPlugin
    RenameTagsPlugin
    RetagPlugin
    SaveCloseTiddlerPlugin
    SearchOptionsPlugin
    SectionLinksPlugin
    ShowPopupPlugin
    ShowReferencesPlugin
    StorySaverPlugin
    StoryViewerPlugin
    SystemInfoPlugin
    TaggedTemplateTweak
    TagglyTaggingPlugin
    TagsplorerMacro
    TiddlerListMacro
    TiddlerNotesPlugin
    TiddlersBarPlugin
    ToggleTagPlugin
    TrashPlugin
    UndoPlugin
    systemConfig
    systemConfigOptions

My Minimum test case is an empty 2.8.0 tiddlywiki
If tiddlyFox is loaded it will save as it always used to
If TiddlyFox is not loaded then it reverts to the new code in 2.8.0 and works (Download Dialogue)

My Plugin Elimination process
Enabling TiddlyFox and Prey I do not get an abend
I then Tag sets of plugins as systemConfigDisable
Save and reload without tiddlyfox to see if an abend occurs
I seem to have reduced the set of offenders to the following
    AliasPlugin
    BreadcrumbsPlugin
    HoverMenuPlugin
    InstantTimestampPlugin
    IntelliTaggerPlugin
    MonkeyTaggerMacro
    NewHerePlugin
that is one or more may be the cause of the immediate abend (without Firefox running)
However I have now got a delayed abend occurring.

When it abends in most cases the current tiddlywiki becomes Bytes in Size, just sometimes it does not save but remains the version when opened.

Please excuse the multiple posts, I am in fear of it abending.

Ok,

So here is the outcome. Through a Comprehensive disabling of all plugins I could not identify any that were responsible. In Fact I can reproduce the fault without any plugins active at all. My TiddlyWiki 2.8.0 running on FireFox FF 21.0 and using TiddlyFox alpha16.

I am usually fine if I am running TiddlyFox however see below. When I am not running tiddlyfox and the save routine is used I all-most always immediately get a FF abend since updating tiddlywiki

It seems to be clear that when TiddlyFox Does its job and the new save routines are not used, save proceeds without fault - however after a period of time eventually tiddlyFox seems to fail intermittently and an presumable passes the save effort to another routine an abend occurs.

My TiddlyWiki is 13,728 KB in size, could there be a fault relating to this size, which is otherwise fine, or a timeout in TiddlyFox or tiddlywiki or FF when saving ?

I am starting to migrate my personal database to an alternative.

Yours Sincerely TonyM

AHHH! I posted the WRONG TW2.8.0 file for the upgrade. It was
supposed to be the empty.html (no content), not the index.html
(tiddlywiki.com content). I've put the corrected file in place.
Upgrading should work properly now.

The problem you are having doesn't sound like a coding error in
TiddlyWiki's file I/O handlers, but rather some kind of internal
memory leakage from FireFox.

I took a quick look through the DUMP output you posted. Most of it is
a complete mystery, but seems like generic crash trace output. One
line that stood out as being, perhaps, more informative, is this:

According to mozilla.org documentation, this file is part of the
internal library that handles 8-bit and 16-bit character strings:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla_internal_string_guide

This version is now packaged with the latest release of
tiddlywebwiki[1] and as a result is now the default TiddlyWiki in
TiddlySpace[2].

Also, because of some adjustments Eric (thanks!) made to the build
process, various versions of TiddlyWiki are available depending on how
you set your ServerSettings[3] tiddler.

If you state

twrelease: beta

you'll get the most recent beta (which is now older than the mainline
release).

If you state

twrelease: beta
external: True

You'll get the most recent beta with an externalized core.

And finally if you state:

external: True

you'll get the current mainline with an externalized core.

You can also do things like this:

Note that TiddlySpace will always run a few days behind Eric's release
schedule because at the moment the files are gathered up and released
in a semi manual process.

Eric,

Thanks for some analysis on this. I have had the FF abend problem for some time, This has been occurring under a number of different FF versions, TiddlyFox and plugin combinations including no FF extensions. In the tests presented by me in this thread only TiddlyFox (or not), Table Tools2 1.17 and Copy HTML 0.2.4 were installed and enabled.

I have disabled all FF Extensions (Not plugins) including TiddlyFox (and disabled TiddlyLockPlugin) and the problem still occurs.

I wonder why the dump refers to E:\ which is not on my machine. ?

Regards
Tony

Admittedly, the current documentation is a bit "stale" and in need of
a general scraping away of "old paint". Here's some of my thoughts:

There's a few different kinds of content being presented:
* basic introduction and step-by-step download/setup instructions
* reference information (formatting, browser-specific issues, etc.)
* current version status and update details
etc.

* A lot of the current "intro" content could certainly be written
differently so that it grabs "potential users" and walks them through
download/installation with a step-by-step "wizard" style.

* The "status" content (or at least a link to it) could be featured
more prominently "above the fold" (i.e., visible without scrolling the
initial page display)

* There's also been some significant changes in the "download" and
"file saving" functionality that needs to be properly explained in the
various bits of browser-specific reference materials.

In general, I think the site needs a major infusion of "energy":
simpler, cleaner content, more interaction with "bright shiny buttons"
to click on... things like that.

Documentation updates are actually quite near the top of my "to do"
list, so you might see some re-writes happening soon. If you have
some specific content you would like to suggest... feel free to post
it (or send it to me privately if you prefer). If you post it online,
I suggest starting a new thread (e.g., "TiddlyWiki.com content
suggestions").

enjoy,

I am now running TiddlyWiki 2.8.0 and FF 21.0 with only the Java (TM) Platform SE U21 10.21.2.11 FF Plugin running.

With TiddlyFox Disabled if I try and save an unchanged since opening TiddlyWiki I get a firefox Crash.
With TiddlyFox Disabled if I try and save an changed since opening TiddlyWiki I get a failure to save the tiddlywiki using the new Save Dialogue.

With TiddlyFox enabled so far I have not had a crash but it now apears when and if tiddlyfox fails to support the save effort (For some reason occuring after a period of time) and it falls back to using the alternate save method (Original in TW 2.7.X and new one in 2.8.0) a inability to save or a crash occurs.

My Guess would be for a stable platfom there is a bug in both TiddlyFox and TW Native save routines - and has been for some time now only brought into focus by the more consistent abend process in the new fall back save routines.

Some more help please dear TiddlyWiki Experts. This is out of my depth.

You long term and dependent tiddlywiki user - TonyM

Hi Tony

Thanks for the thoughtful notes, very useful. I'd add that the memory dump you attached suggests that the cause of the crash is an out of memory condition.

The central observation is that you get a consistent crash after making changes and trying to save with TiddlyFox disabled. My only minor query would be whether you could repeat the tests with Java disabled, just to remove as many variables as possible?

Otherwise, one useful next step would be to be able to duplicate the behaviour you're seeing. Can you remind me of your setup, including RAM?

Many thanks,

Jeremy

Someone on TiddlySpace has independently pointed this out as well. It
appears the problem is in all of IE 6, 7 and 8, starting from a plain
jane empty.html (that is TiddlySpace has nothing to do with it).

I've made a pull request on github that has a potential fix. I'm
hoping Eric is able to integrate it or something like it soon.
