Dan,

I saw this piece a couple weeks ago and found it very puzzling for a
couple of reasons:

Jason Seybold the mfgr engineer behind the E+??? Never heard of the
guy, and the article gives almost zero background on him. He also
doesn't show up in a Google search with EMS.

We know the E+ is a direct descendant of the TF bikes and that many of
the same engineers worked on both. So who is this Seybold guy
(apparently from Pittsburgh) and why haven't we heard of him before?
My only guess is that perhaps he's a new investor with a background in
engineering?

It's my understanding that our old friend Rakesh from Wavecrest was
initially the lead engineer on the E+ bikes before he was let go in a
round of company shakeups at EMS, so for this Seybold dude to be
taking credit for the E+ seems very odd.

I will say EMS has been pretty tight-lipped about the scope and
parameters of their business besides the E+ bikes and I'm starting to
wonder if perhaps they have some Defense Department contracts that
demand total secrecy. Dulles is after all in the heart of DD country.
(Note: Just a wild guess on my part)

Anyone know anything they can share?

Here's a 2+-year-old blog I dug up that mentions Rakesh as president
of EMS when it first started up. If the dates cited in the blog are
even close to accurate it appears EMS was setting up shop almost
immediately after Wavecrest pulled the plug on the Tidalforce e-bike
division (Oct 2005? I'm fairly certain this is the month I bought my
bike from a dealer who was dumping all his stock after Wavecrest
notified him of their decision to exit the bike business).

Apparently some of the engineers behind the TF bikes felt passionately
enough about their work to find some new investors. The motors/
controllers were then tweaked/redesigned to avoid any patent
infringement issues with Wavecrest.

This is one of EMS' first video that was put out. In it, Jason Seybold
is featured towards the end.

Interesting, but I'm still curious about the depth of his involvement
with EMS, especially re the Pittsburgh PA paper's claim that he is one
of the founders of EMS.

Anyone know this dude?

Joe informs me that Jason is a member of this forum, so perhaps he'll
speak up and give us some clarification so we can put this to rest.

For the record, here's a brief bio of EMS taken directly from their
Facebook page:

"Welcome to EMS, the home of E+ Electric Bikes! Electric Motion
Systems, LLC is a company incorporated in Delaware with United States
Headquarters in Dulles, Virginia. The company was founded in 2005 by a
group of engineers, previously working for Wavecrest Technologies,
Inc. with years of research in engineering and electric propulsion
systems.

Electric Motion Systems, LLC develops high-quality Light Electric
Vehicles (LEVs) for fleet and personal needs. EMS employs leading
experts in electric motor, battery, and control system technologies
and designs high quality, reliably performing LEVs using state-of-the-
art, proprietary technologies.

On April 25th 2008, Electric Motion Systems, LLC launched its own
product line of electric bicycles called the E+ Electric Bike."
