Find Out What Nasty Things Our Legislators Are Up To
On Capitol Hill
New York, Feb.6, 2008--Everyone knows that our legislators in Washington will try to sneak some reprehensible bill or resolution into the record when the American public isn’t looking. Right now, for instance, our elected officials on Capitol Hill are trying to:
1) Keep discrimination-in-hiring based on religion in federal programs for substance abuse and mental health. Jews, Atheists or Muslims can’t get hired in most of these faith-based- initiative programs.
2) Allow pharmacists and physicians to deny emergency contraception to women if the pharmacist or physician feels it is against his or her religion to provide that service.
3) Pass a resolution that establishes a nationwide Religious Education Week in May that makes it look like we’re totally and exclusively a Christian nation. (HR 888)
So, Who Ya Gonna Call?
Lori Lipman Brown, that’s who. She’s Our Lady of the Legislation who stalks Congress’s Corridors, buttonholing wayward legislators, telling them that We’re Watching, We’re Angry and We Want Justice … Or Else. Or else what? Or else we expose their perfidy to the world, we withdraw any support we may have given them, we marshal our 14% of the population to vote against them, we arouse the ire of righteous nonbelievers nationwide against them.
The ebullient, personable Lori Lipman Brown is director of the Washington, DC-based Secular Coalition of America, of which New York City Atheists (NYCA) is an affiliate. Lori is a lawyer and former Nevada State Senator (she quips that she is known as the Sex Senator in Nevada, but the explanation, she’ll add, is not as racy as that sounds: She was responsible for getting Nevada’s sodomy laws repealed.)
Lori was the first official Atheist lobbyist to set up an office in Washington and has grown her organization to a staff of five. Come hear her on Sunday at Brunch as she tells us about the work, the joy, the ironies, the malevolence and the triumphs of her job as our major spokesperson and Lobbyist working the Congressional beat.
