I start to use mobile me calendar beta. on new calendar, iCal use
CalDAV for event data of mobile me calendar, my mac does not have
event data, have cache only.
So, I am worried whether spanning sync work. now, I disable calendar
sync.

Does anyone confirm this?

For me, Spanning Sync doesn't work anymore :-/ After upgrading to
MobileMe Calendar Beta, all
my Calendars were moved into CalDAV Calendars under a separate
MobileMe Account. Spanning
Sync doesn't seem to be able to sync from CalDAV Calendars (on my Mac)
to Google CalDAV.
Only the Birthdays Calendars can be synced.

Hi,

Apple's new MobileMe calendar system (currently in beta) is indeed
CalDAV-based. Since Apple Sync Services only allows read-only
"syncing" of CalDAV calendars, this change effectively makes MobileMe
calendars untouchable to every other sync client.

Last year Brian Criscuolo from Mark/Space filed a bug with Apple about
CalDAV calendars being read-only. From Apple's response in the
developer forum, I believe they do consider this a bug but just
haven't gotten around to fixing it. According to Brian, the bug # is
4707114.

Quoting Apple: "You can tell us what you think by clicking the
Feedback link at the bottom of the Calendar sidebar at me.com."

Since Apple wants your feedback, if you're using the new MobileMe
calendars then please ask them to fix this problem, specifically
referencing bug # 4707114. Perhaps they can get it fixed in the next
OS update.

Glad I checked the group before accepting the beta invite. If I
understand this correctly, once you accept the beta, you can only
change calendars from the iCal or iPhone side, and changes from the
Google side will no longer be propagated to iCal / sync services by
SS.

If so this is a blocking problem for me, since my company uses Google
Calendar as our common ground for calendar sharing. I need changes
made to my Google calendar to show up on my iPhone /iPad. (The Beta
also breaks push on the iPad, presumably until iOS 4, but that's not
SS's problem.)

This is kinda bad for SS, correct? Apple's history is to push beta
functions to everyone pretty quickly - my guess is that the beta will
end when the iPad get iOS 4 or thereabouts. Hopefully Apple will fix
the referenced bug before then.

Well, although it kind of takes SS out of the loop, you could
configure your iPad and iPhone to simply sync with Google Calendar
directly via CalDAV. Instructions can be found at
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=151674

On the iOS devices, it works pretty well, although you don't get any
kind of "push" -- instead it will sync up when you open the Calendar
app.

This doesn't really solve getting Google Calendar into iCal itself,
mind you. Although you can set up iCal to access Google Calendar via
CalDAV, the results are pretty ugly for secondary calendars, which
each alternate calendar being placed in its own calendar group.

What about setting up sync with google in the itunes sync menu, where
it says data is synced over the air?

I've just sent my feedback to Apple. Very annoying that it now doesn't
work after all this time! You're essentially forced to choose between
Gmail Cal and MobileMe Cal. I'm standing firm and sticking with Gmail
Cal until Apple fix it! :D

There is an option to downgrade from the new calendar beta:
https://www.me.com/calendar/downgrade

Just tried it ... and got an error. :(

What did everyone expect? It was inevitable, given the constant back and forth via these forums.
Prediction:
Spanning Sync will be no longer, watch and see.

Not really, not everyone uses MobileMe (99$ a year for crap hosting)

I for one know that I will never use it, will pay for my own hosting and will sync my calendars with Spanning Sync / Google

Hi all,

The majority of our customers are actually not MobileMe users, so
Spanning Sync is not going to cease to exist. That doesn't mean that
we're just going to turn our backs on our MobileMe users either. If
it effects our customers then we're concerned, regardless of where the
problem is coming from. We'll continue to lobby Apple to remove the
read-only restrictions on the CalDAV calendar type and search for ways
around it if possible. The MobileMe Calendar system just left beta
and we're actively researching it. We'll keep everyone informed as we
find out more. Until then, if you want to read our blog post about
it, go here:

Thanks,

Byron
