A Poll released 12/10 2010 asked Egyptians about specific harsh
punishments:

Stoning for adultery -- 82% in favor.
Cutting off hands -- 77% in favor.
Death penalty for people who leave the Muslim religion -- 84%

The way it works, for those Muslims who leave Islam, an automatic
death sentence (decapitation, stoning, whatever), but those infidels
who submit to the will of Islam are spared by the mercy of Allah, and
become Dhimmis -- sort of the Islamic version of a free Black in 1840
