Hi,

I would like to find information on Vlad 'Dracul' Tepes' genealogy.
Does any of you know where I could find some info?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Be more precise, what do you mean by "genealogy" ? His ancestors? His
descendants? Or other relations?
Best wishes

Vlad 4 aka-"Dracula=little dragon", "Tepes = impaler" domnul (duke) of Walachia
was born in Transylvania ca.1431, died 1477.
Son of Vlad 3 aka.Dracul (dragon) domnul of Walchia and Maria of Moldavia.

I know of no descendants from him, descendants are from his cadet brother:
Radu 3 of Walachia died ca.1474.

Radu's daughter Maria, married Stefan domnul of Moldavia and had issue.

Data from the Augustan Society Omnibus, early 1990s.

Best wishes,

October 1998. You may contact me for more information.

Try the following two articles in THE AUGUSTAN (which are the only
ones I know of):

Robert Formhals, "A Princely Descent: Vlad III Dracula." Vol. 15, no.
1, p. 38-39.

Walker, R. C., "Would You Rather Be Impaled or Bitten, or Does It
Matter?" Vol. 11, no. 1, p. 6-11. Additions & corrections, Vol. 11,
no. 3, p. 191-94.

Also, I have a text file at my web site
<http://book-smith.tripod.com/dracula.html> that summarizes all this
-- keeping in mind that this descent has *lots* of holes. . . .

I show a son of Vlad !V, Mihnea I, The Bad, Voivode of Wallachia.

His son was: Mircea III, Voivode of Wallachia, etc.

My source: Augustan, The, Vol XV, No. 1, Winter 1972, Page 38.

Thanks Mike and June.

As previously mentioned by KHF there is an interesting article on Dracula's
family and lineage in the Plantagenet Connection, Oct.1998. It's an
enlightening article and also gives a male descent from Vlad 4.

The only dissapointment is that the article contains no references.

If Ken is watching, can you get the references used by the author and post them
here for us?

Best wishes,

Do you know the ancestry of the House of Bassarab? For
instance, is there a connection to any of the Byzantine or
Hungarian noble families (as some of the wives were from
various parts of eastern Europe)? The list you posted is
helpful, but I am really looking for the older history if
it is known. Thanks, Bronwen Edwards

Bassarabs were the local Romanian lords and had no origin from any foreign
nobles.

Some connections with Byzantine families:

[1] Radu II (voivode in 1377-1383) married to one Byzantine woman named
Callipyge [sorry, her ancestry is unknown for me :-(];

[2] Helene (dau.of Radu Cherban who was voivode in 1601-1611) married to
Constantin Cantacuzene (probably connected with Byzantine Cantacuzene - but
it's doubtful).

Connections between Bassarab and Musati (voivodes of Moldau):

[1] Vasilissa [dau.of Io Alexandru "the Good", voivode of the
Moldau(1400/1-1432)], d.after1447; m.Vlad II Dracul, Voivode of Wallachia
(d.1447)

[2] Io Stefan III "the Great", voivode of the Moldau, d.1504; m.4th 1478
Maria Bassaraba (d.1511)

[3] Bogdan III "the One-Eyed", voivode of the Moldau (1479-1517); m.2d 1513
Ruxandra Bassaraba

[4] Chiajna [dau.of Io Petru IV Rares, voivode of the Moldau]; m.1546 Mircea
III, Voivode of Wallachia

One connection between Musati and Hunyadi (Hungarian family Hunyadi had a
Walachian origin):

[1] Io Petru II, voivode of the Moldau(1447, 1448-1449); m.a sister of Janos
Hunyadi
