1. Senior General Than Shwe inspects Indagaw Industrial Zone

YANGON, 14 June - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe
inspected factories and workshops in Indagaw Industrial Zone of the
Ministry of Industry-2 in Bago Division this morning and gave
necessary guidance. Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by
Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army)
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council General Khin Nyunt, member of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe
Win, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council
Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe and officials, arrived at Indagaw
Industrial Zone at 10 am.

Senior General Than Shwe and party were welcomed by members of the
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe,
Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and Lt-Gen Maung Bo, Quartermaster-General
Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye of the
Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development
Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Ko Ko, Minister for
Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen
Aung Min, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin and
Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, No 77 LID Commander Brig-Gen Than Htay,
officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads
of departments.

At the briefing hall of Radiator Plant, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin
reported on implementation of the guidelines given by Senior General
Than Shwe during his inspection tour in Indagaw Industrial Zone in
January 2002, construction of factories and workshops and completed
factories, strength of service personnel and human resource
development, manufacturing of spare parts and new machinery for the
Ministry of Rail Transportation, the Ministry of Electric Power, the
Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Industry-1, the Ministry of
Science and Technology, the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of
Defence, research and innovation and construction of soap factory in
Paung Township in Mon State.

Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries U Myo
Tint reported on construction of engine factory for power tillers, the
purpose of the factory, strength of the service personnel and
programme for annual manufacturing of 3,000 units of 18 h.p power
tillers.

Next, Managing Director of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine
Industries U Soe Thein reported on construction of Radiator Plant,
Disc Wheel Plant, Metal Bearing Plant, Inlet and Exhaust Valve Plant,
products of the factories, and construction of Foundry Ball Bearing
workshop and Power Sub-station.

Next, Managing Director of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical
Industries U Kyaw Win reported on construction of factories for
production of aluminium conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) and metre
boxes, investment, products to be manufactured and capacity of
machines.

Managing Director of Myanma Tyre and Rubber Industries U U Zun
reported on manufacturing of light and heavy vehicle tyres by No 1
Tyre and Rubber Factory (Thaton), tyres used in mechanized farming and
new products, installation of machines that manufacture heavy tyres
and test running.

Next, Managing Director of Myanma Industrial Construction Services U
Ye Tun reported on construction of buildings of other ministries and
organizations and construction of factories and workshops in the zone,
installation of machines, water supply and planting of shade trees and
cultivation of vegetables.

In response to the reports, Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance. He
said that in producing machinery continued efforts are to be made to
substitute local raw materials for foreign raw materials.

Machinery produced by factories and mills are to be adapted to win
public satisfaction, to have good quality and to become useful.
Research and development work is to be conducted with far-sightedness
to improve the quality of machinery year by year in order to become
highly marketable ones. Based on experiences in industrial zones,
strenuous efforts are to be excerted to be able to produce machinery
of high quality.

Furthermore, steps are to be taken to establish advanced electrical
industries to be able to produce more electrical goods. In addition,
constant efforts are to be made to produce skilled technicians needed
at the respective industries, he said. Then, Senior General Than Shwe
and party inspected the displays at Radiator Workshop.

First, ministers, deputy ministers and officials reported on
radiators, metal bearings and ball bearings, inlet & exhaust valve and
disc wheels produced by the workshops under Myanma Automobile and
Diesel Engine Industries to Senior General Than Shwe.

Next, Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected Ayeya-1 power
tillers, trawler-G and mini tractors and 50-80 hp-Zwe tractors
produced by factories under Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries.

Afterwards, officials reported on vehicle tyres produced by factories
under Myanma Tyres and Rubber Industries. Then, Senior General Than
Shwe and party inspected spare parts, metre boxes, wires, batteries,
power cables, gas cylinders produced by factories under Myanma Machine
Tool and Electrical Industries and aluminum wires to be produced.
Next, officials concerned reported on new model Mazda Jeeps produced
by Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries.

Later, Senior General Than Shwe and party proceeded to Inlet & Exhaust
Valve Factory and inspected inlet & exhaust valves produced there and
production process of inlet and exhaust valves. Then, they proceeded
to power tiller engine factory and inspected spare parts for power
tiller engines and production process of power tillers, shaft parts
line, cam shaft line, cylinder block line, cylinder head line, gear
parts line, gear box body line, gear case cover line, crank shaft line
and connection rod line. Afterwards, they also inspected work being
carried out and installation of engines and test run of power tillers
at Machining Centre Room.

Senior General Than Shwe and party looked into Heat Treatment Shop.
They then inspected sites of project being undertaken from observation
tower and gave guidance to officials. Senior General Than Shwe and
party left Indagaw Industrial Zone of the Ministry of Industry-2 by
car for Yangon in the afternoon.

2. Secretary-1 attends Meeting No 3/2003 of
Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring
Smooth and Secure Transport

YANGON, 14 June - The Central Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure
Transport held the meeting No 3/2003 at the meeting hall of Zeyathiri
Beikman on Konmyinttha at 2 pm today, attended by Chairman of the
Central Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport Secretary-1
of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win, members of the State
Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than
and Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, the ministers, the deputy
ministers, senior military officers, members of the Central Committee,
officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office,
departmental heads and construction entrepreneurs. First, Secretary-1
General Khin Nyunt delivered an address. He said that as the
Government has allotted sections of Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway to
private entrepreneurs for upgrading the highway into a modern one as
soon as possible, the entrepreneurs are making efforts for
construction works of the highway. At present, progress of the highway
has been achieved.

The Secretary-1 stressed the need to continue the construction works
for meeting the target without losing sight of it. The entrepreneurs
are to thoroughly implement the plans - to reach Mandalay from Yangon
within 10 hours, to prevent damage of road sections in the rainy
season and to accelerate the construction works beyond the rainy
season. Now, the Government is fulfilling requirements to the
entrepreneurs as much as possible.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint reported on construction of Mandalay-Meiktila road
section, preparations for earth works, construction of bypass, bridges
and conduits being undertaken by Hong Pang Co, Meiktila-Yamethin
section by Yuzana Co and Yamethin-Pyinmana section by Asia World Co in
upgrading the Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway and supervision for
progress of the works.

Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than also reported on upgrading of the old highway
sections, extension of a new road, construction of big and small
bridges on Bago-Nyaunglebin section being carried out by Shwe Thanlwin
Co, Nyaunglebin-Phyu section by Olympic Co, Phyu-Yedashe section by
Kanbawza Co and Yedashe-Pyinmana section by Dagon International Co in
Bago Division and collection of quarry, fuel, tar and heavy machinery.

On behalf of the Secretary of the Central Committee the Minister for
Construction, Deputy Minister U Tint Swe reported on implementation of
the minutes of the meeting No 2/2003 of Central Committee for Ensuring
Smooth and Secure Transport, progress in repaving the old road,
carrying out of earth works of the new road section in upgrading the
Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway, construction of 125 bridges and 346
conduits, allotment for 75 bridges which will be 50 feet and above
long on the highway to Public Works and private entrepreneurs,
construction of 85 miles long Pakokku-Pauk-Kyaukhtu-Kangyi tarred road
and completion of 21/2 miles long DaikU-Sittoung earth road.

Officials of Kanbawza, Asia World, Olympic, Yuzana, Shwe Thanlwin
Highway, Hong Pang and Dagon International companies reported on
upgrading of the original road, construction of the new one and
bypass, building of bridges, stockpiling of construction materials and
heavy machinery for accelerating construction works in open season and
requirements.

Then, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi reported on supplying of
fuel and tar to the entrepreneurs.

The Secretary-1 fulfilled the requirements to them and said
departments concerned and local authorities are to implement the
project tasks of the Union Highway.

3. Outstanding Nun Daw Molini (PhD) honoured

YANGON, 14 June - Mingalar May Women Entrepreneurs All-round
Development Cooperative Society Patron Nun Daw Molini, who received
PhD from Magadha University in India, and President Daw Thet Yee
(Medal for Excellent Performance in Social Field - Class II) were
honoured at a ceremony held at Mingalar Market Dhammayon on Gyatawya
Street in Bahan Township this morning.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Vice-Chairman of the State
Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Aungmyebonsan Monastery Sayadaw Abhidhaja
Maha Rattha Bhaddanta Guru Paņindabhivamsa and members of the Sangha,
and nuns.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin
Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko,
Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt
Maung, Director-General the Department for Promotion and Propagation
of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of the Religious Affairs
Department Dr Myo Myint, departmental officials, local authorities,
members of the cooperative society and guests. The vice-chairman
Sayadaw invested the congregation with the Nine Precepts. Members of
the Sangha recited Parittas.

The minister, the deputy minister, departmental heads and their wives,
wellwishers and guests presented offertories to members of the Sangha
and nuns. Then, Daw Khin Hla Hla, wife of the minister, presented the
certificate of PhD Degree and a certificate of honour to Daw Molini
and a certificate of honour to Daw Thet Yee.

Afterwards, Joint-Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee
Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalajoti delivered a sermon.
Then, the congregation shared the merits gained.

4. Work co-ordination meeting of Development Affairs
Committees held

YANGON, 14 June - The annual work co-ordination meeting of Development
Affairs Committees was held at the Union Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds
here at 7 am on 11 and 12 June. Minister for Progress of Border Areas
and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended
the meeting and delivered an address.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and
Brig-Gen Than Tun, directors-general, deputy directors-general,
directors and officials under the Ministry. In his address, Minister
Col Thein Nyunt dealt with matters on ensuring better transportation
and rural water supply in view of developing towns and rural areas. He
also urged officials concerned to make efforts for winning public
participation in endeavours for socio-economic development of urban
and rural people.

5. Commander inspects sanitation tasks at
townships in Yangon City

YANGON, 14 June - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development
Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe this morning
viewed sanitation works and dredging of silt at the drains for proper
flow of water being carried out by Tatmadawmen, members of Myanmar
Police Force, workers of Yangon City Development Committee, members of
Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, Maternal and Child
Welfare Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs and local
people in districts, townships and wards of Yangon City.

At 6 am, the commander arrived at Myawady Yeiktha in Mingala
Taungnyunt Township and inspected sanitation tasks at the Yeiktha and
Pha-Hsa-Pa-La Ward in the township.

Next, the commander and party proceeded to Aungzeya Street in Thakayta
Township and saw over cleaning works on Aungzeya and Aungyadana
Streets and sanitation for proper flow of water at drains in Ward 4
(North), Thakayta Township, and condition of the pond in the ward.
They then inspected dredging of silt at drains along Dhammayon Road
and Thallawady 6th Lane in Ward 10 (South), Thakayta Township.

The commander gave instructions on tasks to be carried out for
prevention of swampy areas in the wards in the rainy season. At the
junction of West Race Course, North Race Course and Saya San Road, the
commander and party inspected condition of the underground canal where
water flows into Khunhnapinlein Creek at the junction of West Race
Course, North Race Course and Saya San Road. The commander and the
vice-mayor viewed dredging of silt and unblocking of rubbish at drains
on both sides of East Circular Road in Bahan Township and gave
necessary instructions.

In Hlinethaya Township, the commander and party inspected repair of
the sluice gate at Hlinethaya Creek. Officials reported on the flow of
water in the creek and flow of water into Hline River. In his
inspection tours, the commander gave instructions on sanitation tasks
to be carried out systematically, cleanliness of drains, canals and
creeks for prevention of swamping wards and roads and systematic
throwing of rubbish.

6. Paper reading session held

YANGON, 14 June - The paper reading session organized by Myanmar
Writers and Journalists Association took place at the office of MWJA
at Sarpay Beikman on Merchant Street here at noon today.

Present on the occasion were MWJA Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung),
Vice-Chairman U Than Maung (Than Maung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun
Twantay), joint-secretaries and CEC members, guests and others.

Daw Kyan presented the paper "Three writers whose names include 'Tin'
in Myanmar literature" and U Aye Cho (MA), "Books published up to 1885
(volume I)". They then replied to the queries raised by those present.
Afterwards, the chairman spoke words of thanks.

YANGON, 14 June - A ceremony to donate cash and kind to the Myanmar
Writers and Journalists Association was held at the meeting hall of
the association, on the second floor of Sarpay Beikman building on
Merchant Street at noon today, attended by Chairman of the MWJA U Hla
Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice-Chairman U Than Maung (Than Maung), Secretary
U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay), joint-secretaries, central executive
committee members, members of TWJAs in Yangon Division, wellwishers
and guests.

The wellwishers donated cash and kind to the MWJA-Chief Editor of the
Naing Ngan Gon Ye Magazine Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) (Myinmu Maung Naing
Moe), K 500,000; U Mya Thein (Writer Moe Htet Myint-Myitwa-kyunpaw), K
60,000; Aung Taman Clinic Sayagyi U Win Maung-Sayamagyi Daw Yin Yin
Myint and their son Zwe Nyan Ye Lin, five kinds of traditional
medicines worth of K 120,000; and Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung)

8. Supreme Court Justice tours Bago Division

YANGON, 14 June - Supreme Court Justice U Tin Aye met with division,
district and township judges and township deputy and additional judges
at the Thayawady District Court and Bago Division (West) Court on 12
June and brief them on judicial affairs.

Also present on the occasion were officials of division, district and
township Peace and Development Councils and organizations related to
the judicial affairs.

The supreme court justice inspected Bago Division (West) Court, Pyay
District Court and Thayawady District Court yesterday and gave
necessary instructions.

10. Third Meeting of High Level Task Force on
ASEAN Economic Integration

YANGON, 14 June - Third Meeting of High Level Task Force on ASEAN
Economic Integration continued for the last day at the Grand Plaza
Parkroyal Hotel in Alanpya Pagoda Road here this morning.

It was attended by delegates from the ASEAN member countries and
officials of the ASEAN Secretariat.

Permanent Secretary of the Commerce Department of Thailand Mr Karun
Kittisataporn presided over the meeting. The delegates discussed
possibilities of liberalisation/facilitation measures, institutional
changes and movement of human resources stated in the papers on ASEAN
Economic Community. Then, they dealt with matters on proposed end
goals of AEC, existing initiatives, operational problems and new
initiatives. The fourth meeting will be held on 2-8-2003 in Singapore.

11. Minister for Foreign Affairs leaves to attend 36th
ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

YANGON, 14 June - At the invitation of the Chairman of the 36th ASEAN
Standing Committee and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation of Cambodia, Mr HOR Namhong, Minister for Foreign Affairs
U Win Aung left here by air this morning for Cambodia to attend the
36th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), ASEAN+3 Foreign Ministers'
Meeting, 10th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), ASEAN Post Ministerial
Conference (PMC) and Third Ministerial Meeting on Mekong-Ganga
Cooperation to be held from 15 to 20 June 2003 in Phnom Penh,
Cambodia.

Minister U Win Aung was seen off at Yangon International Airport by
Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Helath Dr Kyaw
Myint, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win,
Ambassadors of Thailand and Cambodia and officials of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador of Myanmar to Cambodia U Saw Hla Min, Ambassador of Myanmar
to Indonesia U Kyaw Myint, Ambassador of Myanmar to Laos U Tin Oo,
Director-General of the Political Department U Thaung Tun,
Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department U Aung Bwa, Deputy
Head of Department of Ministry of Defence Col Si Thu, Director of the
ASEAN Affairs Department U Tint Swai, Minister-Counsellor of Myanmar

12. ASEAN delegates leave

YANGON, 14 June - After attending the Third Meeting of the High Level
Task Force on ASEAN Economic Integration held in Yangon, Myanmar from
13 to 14 June, 2003, the delegates from ASEAN member countries and
ASEAN Secretariat left here for home by air this evening.

13. Basketball tourney opened

YANGON, 14 June - The opening of Rainy Season Basketball Tournament
(2003) organized by Myanmar Basketball Federation and Myanmar Chinese
National Sports Association was held at Kyaikkasan Basketball
Gymnasium here this morning. Among the spectators were MBF President
Professor Dr Sein Myint, Vice-Presidents Daw Nu Nu Yee and U Thet Oo,
General Secretary U Maung Maung Myint and executives, Chinese
Ambassador Mr Li Jinjun, Chairman of Myanmar National Sports
Association U Maung Maung Chin and officials and guests. The team of
Chinese Embassy staff led by the Chinese ambassador played a friendly
basketball match against the combined team of members of MBF and
Myanmar Chinese National Sports Association.

Altogether 14 teams are taking part in the men's division (open), five
teams in women's division (open) and six teams in men's U-16 division.
On the opening day, three matches of men's division (open) and three
matches of men's U-16 division were held. The tournament continues
tomorrow.
