Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a nightmare valueing/selling a MacBook Pro (mid-2010 model so the one previous to current, bought early 2011 at £1599) - I have put it on GumTree at £900 but it didn't sell, then put it on eBay and am getting ridiculous offers of about £400! Am I nuts in this? A friend has just bought a white MacBook for £550 so I would expect to easily get over £800!

Any thoughts, list, or tips on where I can sell this easily? (A shop or something that'll give good value?)

Id estimate the earliest intel models to be worth around £400 assuming it all works and is reasonably clean/undented for its age.  the G4 machines now are pretty much worthless.
The problem with your price, is (perceptively) a new macbook air costs £850 and a new macbook pro costs £1000 - we all know thats not really the case, as its just apples marketing of the lowest spec of each range, which your laptop isn't.

I think your price expectations are realistic, but offputting to casual browsers or impulse buyers.  I'd go for ebay but with a long auction run time, and take time over the photos and description.  If you just need to get rid of the thing quickly to raise cash then you could sell to a shop, but you'll need to accept a lower price.  Someone who actually knows what the computer is and what they are worth should come along eventually.

I know its a bit naughty, but if it happened to still have photoshop, or logic or similar nice software left installed on the hard drive it would make it more attractive to the second hand crowd.

Thanks Toby,

Yeah, I agree - thing is, this was the current model last May until the Thunderbolt ones came out, so really is worth a lot more than the ridiculous offers I've been getting!!! Anyway, hopefully it'll sell. I'll put whatever software anyone wants on it, presuming they have a license for it (which, y'know, I don't necessarily have to see...).

The trouble is that without thunderbolt it's considered a dead end product line, so people will expect to pay less for it despite it being a capable machine.

Chris,

If you want an idea of its commercial 'worth' go to mac2sell.com - this takes into account the computer, amount of RAM and the size of the hard drive but it's still a bit like referring to 'Glass's Guide' to get an idea of the value of a second-hand car.

Quite rightly, anything second-hand is worth as much as someone who wants/needs it is prepared to pay.

I tend to favour the shotgun approach when selling something like this, post it for sale wherever you can, for as long as possible, at the cheapest cost for the posting.
