WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #2: AUGUST 11 - 18, 1991
North Atlantic Basin:
Hurricane Bob: Tropical Depression Three formed on 16 August out of a
persistent area of disturbed weather that had drifted west to near 25N
75W. The system turned northwest and became Tropical Storm Bob later that
day. Hurricane intensity was reached late on 17 August as Bob headed north-
northwest. Bob reached an intensity of 100 kt at the end of this summary
period as it approached the coast of North Carolina. Further details on
Bob will appear in the next summary.
Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):
Tropical Storm Hilda: Hilda peaked at 55 kt intensity on 11 August.
The storm continued north-northwest and weaked to a depression by 13
August. Hilda dissipated west of California near 33N 122W on 14 August.
Although Hilda did not hit land, it brought unseasonable rain to parts of
California.
Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W):
No tropical cyclones.
Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):
Typhoon Ellie: Tropical Storm Ellie continued on a basically west track
while slowly intensifying. Typhoon intensity was reached on 13 August while
passing near the island of Chichijima. The typhoon peaked at 75 kt on 14
August, then weakened below typhoon intensity on 16 August as it passed
near Okinawa. Ellie crossed Taiwan on 17 August, and at the end of the
summary period was drifting in the Formosa Straits with 35 kt winds. While
gusty winds and heavy rains were reported from both Okinawa and Taiwan,
there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.
Typhoon Fred: Tropical Depression 12W crossed northern Luzon on 12
August. On 13 August, it intensified into Tropical Storm Fred as it moved
west-northwest. Fred reached typhoon intensity on 14 August and peaked at
95-100 kt on 16 August. The typhoon tracked basically west just off the
coast of China to Hainan Island and from there into Vietnam on 17 August.
Fred dissipated over Thailand on 18 August. At least 10 people are known
dead as Fred hit a diving barge off Hong Kong. Other reports show Fred
produced strong winds to the north over Hong Kong and China as it tracked
westward.
Tropical Depression 13W: Tropical Depression 13W formed near 21N 159E
on 12 August. The short-lived depression dissipated the next day near
29N 146E. Maximum winds were 25-30 kt.
Tropical Storm Gladys: Tropical Depression 14W started forming near
22N 152E on 15 August. Moving west-northward, the system became Tropical
Storm Gladys on 16 August. At the end of the summary period, Gladys
continues moving west-northwest with winds hovering around 60 kt.
North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.
South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
