WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #233 JANUARY 14 - 21, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Bonita (TC-06S): At the start of the summary period,
Bonita was a weakening tropical storm over Mozambique. The system continued
to weaken ad dissipated over Mozambique on 15 January.

Details of Bonita's effects are found in Summary #232. There are no
additional reports of damage or casualties at this time.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Yasi (TC-08P): Tropical Cyclone Yasi formed near 21S 174W
on 16 January. The cyclone moved generally southeast through its life. Yasi
reached a peak intensity of 45 kt on 17 January, then it became extratropical
near 27S 161W on 19 January.

Yasi affected Tonga as it was first developing. Fua' Amotu reported a
pressure of 995.7 mb at 0600 UTC 16 January. There are no reports of damage
or casualties at this time.
