WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #22: DECEMBER 29, 1991 - JANUARY 5, 1992

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression 01W: The first tropical depression of 1992 in the
Western North Pacific formed near 5N 178E on 5 January. At the end of the
summary period it was moving west toward the Marshall Islands with 30 kt
winds.

Special Western North Pacific Note: This summary marks the end of the of
the 1991 typhoon season and the beginning of the 1992 season. Further de-
tails of 1991 activity in the Western North Pacific will be published at
some future time in:

(published by the US Navy)

Special Western North Pacific Update: Some additional information has
come in through the Weekly Climate Bulletin on the impact of several
Western North Pacific storms:

Typhoon Ivy (Summaries #5-6): Ivy caused heavy rains and flooding in
the Tokyo region of Japan. No casualties have been reported.

Typhoon Kinna (Summary #6): Kinna's passage across Okinawa and Japan
caused 9 deaths.

Tropical Storm Luke (Summaries #6-7): Luke recurved just south of
Japan causing high winds, heavy rains, and landslides. At least 8 people
were killed in the storm.

Typhoon Mireille (Summaries #7-8): At least 50 people died during the
passage of Mireille across western Japan.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Special North Indian Ocean Note: This summary marks the end of the 1991
tropical cyclone season and the start of the 1992 season. Further details
on 1991 activity will be published at a future time in:

Mausam (published by the Indian Meteorological Service)

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Bryna (TC-10S): A tropical depression formed near 13S
63E on 30 December. Moving west-southwest, the system reached tropical
storm intensity the next day. Bryna continued its west-southwest track as
it slowly intensified to a peak intensity of 45-55 kt just prior to hitting
northern Madagascar on 2 January. Bryna weakened quickly to a depression
as it did a slow and erratic recurvature over and near Madagascar. At the
end of the summary period, Bryna was over southern Madagascar moving south-
southeast with 25 kt winds. While it appears that Bryna has produced a
large amount of rain over Madagascar, there are no reports of damage or
casualties at this time.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
