WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #206 JULY 9 - 16, 1995

North Atlantic Basin:

Tropical Storm Barry: At the start of the summary period, Barry was moving
north-northeast across eastern Nova Scotia with 45-50 kt winds. The storm
became extratropical on 10 July near 47N 60W.

In addition to the observations in the previous summary, Fourchu Head,
Nova Scotia reported 41 kt sustained winds and a pressure of 990.6 mb at 0000
UTC 10 July. There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

Tropical Storm Chantal: Tropical Depression 3 formed near 21N 63W on 13
July. The system was initially moving west-northwest, and this motion contin-
ued through 15 July. The depression reached tropical storm strength on 14
July, and slow strengthening continued through the rest of the summary period.
Chantal turned north on 16 July, and at the end of the summary period it was
continuing this track with 55 kt winds.

A reconnaissance aircraft reported a minimum pressure of 991 mb at 2338 UTC
16 July. Ship KMJL reported 45 kt winds at 0000 UTC 15 July.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Hurricane Barbara: At the start of the summary period, Barbara was moving
west-northwest with 75 kt winds. The storm turned west and reached a 115 kt
intensity on 10 July, and this track continued through the remainder of the
summary. Maximum sustained winds dropped to 95 kt on 11 July, then increased
to a peak intensity of 120 kt on 13 July. Barbara maintained 115 kt winds
through 14 July, then rapidly weakened to a tropical storm on 15 July.
Further weakening occurred on 16 July, and at the end of the summary period,
Barbara was crossing 140W into the Central North Pacific with 40 kt winds.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.):

Tropical Depression 5W: Tropical Depression 5W formed near 15N 142E on 16
July. At the end of the summary period, it was moving north-northwest with
30 kt winds.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
