WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #250 MAY 12 - 19, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression 1E: Tropical Depression 1E formed near 11N 115W on
13 May. The system initially moved west, and it followed a west to west-
northwest track through its lifetime. The cyclone dissipated near 14N 128W
on 16 May. The maximum winds in the depression were estimated at 30 kt.

Tropical Depression 2E: Tropical Depression 2E formed near 13N 109W on
15 May. The system initially moved west, and it also followed a west to
west-northwest drift through its lifetime. The cyclone dissipated near 14N
114E on 18 May. Maximum sustained winds in this system were estimated at
30 kt.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.):

Typhoon Bart: At the start of the summary period, Bart was east of the
Philippine Islands moving northwest with 65 kt winds. The typhoon continued
northwest on 13 May, then it moved north-northwest on 14 May while reaching
a peak intensity of 125 kt. Bart recurved north-northeast on 15 May followed
by an east-northeast motion on 16 May. The cyclone accelerated northeast
on 17 May, and this motion continued through the rest of its life. Bart
slowly weakened during this time. It weakened to a tropical storm on 18 May,
and it became extratropical later that day near 28N 142E.

Several ships reported tropical storm force winds in Bart. These include
the JKVH, which reported 43 kt winds at 1200 UTC 14 May, and the 9VEB, which
reported 40 kt winds at 0600 and 1200 UTC 15 May. Although Bart's fringes
affected the Philippines, there are no reports of damage or casualties at
this time.

Tropical Depression 5W: Tropical Depression 5W formed over the South
China Sea near 14N 113E on 18 May. Initially stationary, the system began a
north-northeast drift on 19 May. At the end of the summary period it was
continuing this motion with 30 kt winds.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
