WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #5: SEPTEMBER 1 - 8, 1991

North Atlantic Basin:

Hurricane Claudette: Tropical Depression Six formed near 27N 56W on 4
September. Moving west-southwestward, the depression became Tropical Storm
Claudette the next day. Rapid intensification then occurred, as Claudette
reached hurricane intensity on 6 September with winds reaching 100 kt later
that day. Winds peaked at 110 kt on 7 September as the hurricane moved
northwestward. It must be pointed out that the maximum intensity of the
storm occurred in a 20 hr gap in air reconnaissance, so the exact peak
intensity is still open to debate. At the end of the summary period,
Claudette was moving northward east of Bermuda with winds down to 90 kt.

Tropical Storm Danny: Tropical Depression Seven formed near 11N 26W on
7 September. Moving westward, its winds had reached 40 kt by the end of the
summary period.

Tropical Depression Eight: Tropical Depression Eight formed near 25N 50W
on 8 September. At the end of the summary period, it was moving northwest
with 25 kt winds.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Ivy: Tropical Depression 17W formed near 8N 156E on 2 September.
Moving west-northwest, it became Tropical Storm Ivy the next day. Ivy
reached typhoon intensity on 5 September as it turned north-northwest. Ivy
continued along this course while intensifying to a peak intensity of 115
kt on 7 September. On 8 September, Ivy recurved onto a northeastward track
just south of Japan as it weakened to 105 kt.

Tropical Storm Joel: Tropical Depression 18W formed near 19N 118E on 3
September. Moving west, it intensified into Tropical Storm Joel the next
day. Joel then stalled near 20N 115E on 5 September while slowly inten-
sifying. On 6 September, Joel moved northward into China just east of Hong
Kong. Maximum winds prior to landfall were 50 kt. Gusty winds were reported
in Hong Kong. However, no reports of damage or casualties have been re-
cieved at this time. Joel dissipated over China on 7 September.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
