WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #8: SEPTEMBER 22 - 29, 1991

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Hurricane Jimena: At the start of the summary period, Jimena was moving
west through the Eastern Pacific with 70 kt winds. Rapid intensification
ensued, and winds reached 120 kt the next day. Jimena continued westward
with 115-120 kt winds until 26 September, when a turn to the west-northwest
and a weakening trend developed. By the end of the summary period, Jimena's
winds had decreased to 85 kt as it moved west-northwest.

Hurricane Kevin: Tropical Depression 13E formed near 12N 98W on 25 Sep-
tember. The depression became Tropical Storm Kevin later that day. Hurri-
can intensity was reached on 26 September as Kevin moved west-northwest.
The west-northwest motion continued through the rest of the summary period
as did a steady intensification. Maximum winds at the end of the period
were 115 kt.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Mireille: At the start of the summary period, Typhoon Mireille
peaked in intensity at 130 kt south of Japan. A slow weakening followed as
Mireille continued northwest. On 26 September, Mireille passed between
Miyakojima and Okinawa. It then recurved northeast toward Japan. The
storm passed over the Japanese islands on 27 September, with Nagasaki re-
porting gusts to 118 kt and a minimum pressure of 943 mb. Mireille continued
northeastward and became extratropical on 28 September near 47N 148E. There
is an unofficial and unconfirmed report that 46 people were killed in Japan
by Mireille. The extratropical Mireille continued northeast into the Aleut-
ian Islands, becoming the fourth formerly tropical Western Pacific system
to do so during September.

Typhoon Nat: At the start of the summary period, Typhoon Nat was moving
west toward the southern end of Taiwan with 110 kt winds. Nat hit Taiwan on
23 September and quickly weakened to a tropical storm. Further erratic mot-
ion then ensued. On 24 September, Nat moved southwest into the South China
Sea. The next day it moved south-southwest. On 26 September, it moved
south-southeast. On the day after that, it drifted east. During this time,
Nat weakened, and it became a tropical depression on 26 September, On 28
September, Nat became quasi-stationary near 16N 117E and regained tropical
storm intensity. On 29 September, Nat started moving north and the winds
increased to 60 kt.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
