WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #125: DECEMBER 19 - 26, 1993

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Nell: A tropical depression formed near 7N 150E on 20 December.
This system moved west through 24 December when it passed between the islands
of Yap and Koror. The depression acheived tropical storm status on 25 December
as it continued westward. Nell reached typhoon intensity on 26 December, and
a peak intensity of 70 kt occurred just as the storm moved into Mindanao Island
in the Philippines. The storm turned west-northwest after landfall, and at the
end of the summary period it was moving west-northwest through the central
Philippines with 70 kt winds. Iloilo on Panay Island reported 39 kt sustained
winds and a pressure of 995.2 mb at 1900 UTC 26 December. Mactan Airport on
Cebu also reported 39 kt winds at 1300 UTC the same day. Press reports thus far
indicate 47 people killed and 16 missing in the Philippines due to Nell. Exten-
sive damage was also reported, especially on Cebu.

North Indian Ocean Basin:

Tropical Depression Manny: The remains of Western North Pacific Typhoon
Manny regenerated into a tropical depression near 9N 84E on 19 December. Init-
ially moving northwest, the system stalled just north of Sri Lanka and weakened
to a low pressure area on 20 December. While this was the end of the system as
a tropical cyclone, the low pressure area persisted for several more days as it
moved west into the Arabian Sea. Maximum sustained winds in this system were
estimated at 30 kt. There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Cecelia (TC-03S): At the start of the summary period,
Cecelia was moving west-southwest toward Mauritius with 40-45 kt winds. The
storm turned south the next day as it weakened, and it dissipated on 21
December near 21S 55E. Although this system passed through the Mascarene Is-
lands, there are no reports of damage, casualties, or significant weather at
this time.

Tropical Depression: The Perth, Australia warning center issued several
advisories on a "tropical low" on 24 December. This system formed near 10S 109E
that day, and dissipated later that day near 11S 111E. Maximum sustained winds
in this short-lived system were estimated at 30 kt.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
