WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #254 JUNE 9 - 16, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin:

Tropical Cyclone 02A: Tropical Cyclone 02A formed over the Arabian Sea
near 18N 58E on 11 June. Moving northwest, the cyclone made landfall over
Oman and dissipated later that same day. Maximum sustained winds reached
40 kt prior to landfall.

Masirah, Oman reported a 994 mb pressure at 0400 UTC 11 June, while
Fahud, Oman reported 30 kt winds and a 996.1 mb pressure at 1200 UTC the same
day. There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

Tropical Cyclone 03B: Tropical Cyclone 03B formed over the Bay of Bengal
near 10N 87E on 12 June. The system moved west-northwest through 14 June,
with it reaching tropical storm strength on 13 June and a peak intensity of
45 kt later that day. TC-03B was close to the Indian coast when it turned
north-northeast on 15 June. It moved northward into eastern India on 16
June, and at the end of the summary period, TC-03B was continuing this track
with 40 kt winds.

Vishakhapatnam, India reported 30 kt winds and a 987.5 mb pressure at 0000
UTC 16 June. Madras, India reported a 991.5 mb pressure at 0000 UTC 14 June.
Several other Indian coastal stations reported pressures below 995 mb.

Press reports indicate that TC-03B was responsible for more than 100
deaths, primarily from flooding caused by heavy rains. While the storm
undoubtedly caused damage, there are no monetary damage figures available at
this time.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
