WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #174 NOVEMBER 27 - DECEMBER 4, 1994

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Special North Indian Ocean Update: Tropical Cyclone 05A: Late press reports
indicate that 75 people were killed in northeastern Somalia. In addition,
50 more people were reported killed due to flooding in the Red Sea port of
Djibouti as the remains of the system moved over that area.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

At the start of the summary period, Albertine was moving south-southwest
over the open Indian Ocean with 115 kt winds. This turned out to be the
peak intensity. The storm turned southwest while weakening on 28 November,
with the track and weakening continuing the next day. The cyclone turned south
on 30 November as it weakened to a tropical storm. The southward motion con-
tinued until the system became extratropical near 26S 62E on 2 December.

Albertine affected Rodrigues Island during its weakening stage. The island
reported 48 kt sustained winds at 0600 UTC 30 November and a minimum pressure
of 1000.8 mb 6 hr earlier. In addition, I inadvertently omitted some signif-
icant ship reports from last week's summary. Ship DDOJ reported 52 kt winds
and a pressure of 998.5 mb at 0000 UTC 25 November, while ship DCLX reported
45 kt winds at 1800 UTC 23 November. Although Albertine affected Diego Garcia
and Rodrigues (as well as these ships), there are no reports of damage or
casualties at this time.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
