WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #24: JANUARY 12 - 19, 1992

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Tropical Storm Axel: At the start of the summary period, Tropical Storm
Axel was moving west with 35 kt winds. It turned north-northwest and weak-
ened to a depression the next day. Axel turned north on 14 January and
northeast on 15 January, becoming extratropical later that day near 20N
143E. While Axel passed through the Marshall and Caroline Islands during
its lifetime, there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Betsy (TC-11P): At the start of the summary period,
Betsy was moving south with 55 kt winds. Betsy continued weakening and
moving south until 14 January, when it turned southeast while maintaining
40 kt winds. Betsy became extratropical the next day near 30S 162E. So far,
there are no reports of damage or casualties from Betsy.

Tropical Cyclone 02P: Tropical Cyclone 02P formed near 12S 161W on 17
January. Moving east-southeast and then southeast, the system recahed a
peak intemsity of 35 kt on 18 January. The cyclone then turned south and
became extratropical near 22S 155W. Although the system moved through the
Cooks Islands, there are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.
