polar orbiting satellite imagery is now available via the World Wide Web (http
protocol) using Mosaic. This is courtesy of Greg Deuel at the DMSP satellite
archive. It can be retrieved by:

1. Open the Open URL window (under File) in Mosaic, then typing:
http://web.ngdc.noaa.gov.

2. Find the Home Page for the DMSP satellite archive

3. Click on Weekly Updated Items, then click on the dates given on the next
page.

4. The imagery links will be color-coded inside the summary text.

For more information on the imagery and how the digitized summary and
images can be retrieved by ftp, gopher, etc., please contact Greg Deuel

WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #149 JUNE 5-12, 1994

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Tropical Storm Russ: At the start of the summary period, Russ was drifting
west through the northern South China Sea with 45 kt winds. Russ moved west
on 6 June, then it turned northwest on 7 June as it reached a peak intensity
of 55 kt. Russ moved north-northwest into southern China on 8 June. The
storm maintained its peak intensity to landfall, then it rapidly weakened.
Zhanjiang reported a minimum pressure of 980.6 mb at 0900 UTC 8 June, while
Haikou reported a pressure of 989.7 mb at 0000 UTC the same day. While there
were no reports of sustained tropical storm-force winds at any land station,
higher winds probably occurred between reports. The cyclone dissipated over
southern China on 9 June. Press reports indicated that Russ killed four
people with 10 others missing in southern China. 12,000 homes were reported
destroyed. Heavy rains from the storm helped ease a drought over parts of
southern China.

North Indian Ocean Basin:

Tropical Cyclone 03A: A tropical depression formed near 18N 72E on 6 June
from a disturbance that moved off the west coast of India. Initially moving
northwest, the system reached tropical storm strength later that day. TC-03A
turned west on 7 June, and this motion continued through the rest of the
storm's life. The cyclone reached a peak intensity of 60 kt on 8 June.
Shearing caused rapid weakening later that day, and by the end of the day
TC-03A was a minimal tropical storm. Further weakening followed, and TC-03A
dissipated on 9 June near 20N 59E.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
