WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #58: SEPTEMBER 6 - 13, 1992

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W):

Hurricane Orlene: At the start of the summary period, Orlene was moving
west-northwest with 125 kt winds. Orlene continued to move west-northwest
through 8 September while weakening to 75 kt. A brief re-intensification to
85 kt occured on 9 September as Orlene turned northward, with the storm
starting to weaken again the next day as it turned north-northwest. Orlene
turned west on 11 September as it weakened to tropical storm intensity. On
12 September, Orlene crossed into the Central North Pacific moving generally
west with 35 kt winds.

Hurricane Paine: Tropical Depression 19E formed near 19N 114W on 11 Sep-
tember. Initially moving west, the system reached tropical storm strength
later that day. Paine moved west to west-southwest on 12 September, then it
turned northwest on 13 September as it reached hurricane intensity. At the end
of the summary period, Paine was moving northwest with 65 kt winds.

Tropical Depression 20E: This system formed near 17N 112W on 13 September.
at the end of the summary period, it was moving slowly northwest with 30 kt
winds.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W):

Hurricane Iniki: At the start of the summary period, Tropical Depression 18E
was moving west with 30 kt winds. This motion and intensity continued through
the next day. Tropical storm intensity was reached on 8 September as the system
continued westward. Iniki continued west as it reached hurricane strength the
next day. Iniki turned west-northwest on 10 September while continuing to
stregthen. On 11 September, Iniki turned north and accelerated toward the
western Hawaiian Islands and reached a peak intensity of 125 kt with a minimum
pressure of 937 mb measured by reconassiance aircraft. Iniki passed over the
island of Kauai early on 12 September (UTC) with estimated 115 kt winds and a
pressure of 945 mb just prior to landfall. The storm continued northward while
weakening on 12 September. The system weakened to a tropical storm on 13 Sep-
tember, and it became extratropical later that same day near 38N 157W.

As far as can be determined, Iniki is the strongest hurricane to hit the
Hawaiian Islands since at least 1871. No meteorological data is available from
Kauai or Niihau (the two most affected islands) during the time the eye passed.
However, it is known that severe damage occurred on Kauai. Oahu and Maui were
affected by tropical storm force winds, with peak gusts of about 40-50 kt in
Honolulu. Damage assesments for these islands are unavailable. At least three
people are know dead so far in the Hawaiian Islands. There will be further up-
dates on Iniki's effects when more information becomes available.

Tropical Storm Orlene: Ex-hurricane Orlene moved west into the Central
North Pacific on 12 September with 35 kt winds. The storm continued to weaken,
and it was downgraded to a depression later that day. Orlene turned west-south-
west on 13 September, and at the end of the summary period it was heading for
the Hawaiian Islands with 25 kt winds.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Typhoon Ryan: At the start of the summary period, Ryan was moving north-
northeast with 105 kt winds. This turned out to be the peak intensity of the
storm. Ryan turned north on 7 September and west-northwest on 8 September while
slowly weakening. Ryan moved northwest on 9 September, with recurvature to the
north-northeast occurring on 10 September. Ryan accelerated northward on 11
September as it weakend to a tropical storm, and the system became extratrop-
ical on 12 September in the Sea of Okhotsk near 49N 148E. Although Ryan affect-
ed the northern Mariana Islands early in its life, there are no reports of
damage or casualties at this time.

Typhoon Sybil: The tropical depression mentioned in the previous summary
was quasi-stationary near 23N 166E at the start of the summary period. The
system started moving south-southeast and reached tropical storm intensity
on 7 September about 60 miles east of Wake Island. Sybil moved slowly south-
southeast through 8 September, then it turned north-northeast as it reached
typhoon intensity the next day. Sybil abruptly turned west-northwest on 10
September, and the storm continued this generally motion the next day as it
reached a peak intensity of 115 kt. Sybil moved northwest on 12 September and
north on 13 September as it weakened. At the end of the summary period, Sybil
was moving north with 70 kt winds. Wake Island reported maximum sustained winds
of 42 kt with gusts to 51 kt with a minimum pressure of 986.5 mb. Several
hours of reports were lost due to communications failures, and it is possible
that higher winds and lower pressures occurred during this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
