WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #83: FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 7, 1993

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W):

Tropical Depression 01W: A tropical depression formed near 6N 132E on
28 February. Moving west-northwest, the system crossed the Philippine Is-
land of Mindanao on 1 March. The depreesion weakend to a low pressure
area over the South China Sea the next day. Maximum winds in the system
were 30 kt. There are no reports of damage or casualties at this time.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Hutelle: Tropical Cyclone Hutelle formed near 19S 49E
on 2 March. Moving northwest, it made landfall on Madagascar and dissipated
the next day. Maximum winds in the storm were 35 kt. There are no reports
of damage, casualties, or significant weather with this system

Tropical Cyclone Ionia: Tropical Cyclone Ionia formed on 3 March near
19S 43E. Moving southeast, the system made landfall near Maintirano, Mada-
gascar the next day and dissipated over land. Maintirano reported a minimum
pressure of 996.4 mb at 0300 UTC 4 March. There are no reports of damage or
casualties at this time. Hutelle and Ionia were spawned by a very active
monsoon trough that had lingered over Madagascar for several days.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Polly (TC-21P): At the start of the summary peiod,
Polly was moving south with 100 kt winds. This was the peak intensity of
the system. Polly turned southeast on 1 March while weakening, and the
storm accelerated southeast the next day. Polly became extratropical near
31S 173E on 3 March.
