WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #231 DECEMBER 31, 1995 - JANUARY 7, 1996

North Atlantic Basin: No tropical cyclones.

Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones.

Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg.): No tropical cyclones.

North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones.

South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Depression: At the start of the summary period, the depression
was drifting south through the open ocean with 25-30 kt winds. The system
dissipated on 1 January near 23S 52E.

Tropical Cyclone Bonita (TC-06S): Tropical Cyclone Bonita formed near 14S
69E on 5 January. The system moved west-southwest through the rest of the
summary period, at which time it was packing 55 kt winds.

Bonita passed near St. Brandon Island, which reported 33 kt sustained
winds and a 1000.3 mb pressure at 1800 UTC 7 January. There are no reports of
damage or casualties at this time.

South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E):

Tropical Cyclone Barry (TC-05P): Tropical Cyclone Barry formed over the
Gulf of Carpentaria near 15N 193E on 4 January. Initially moving east, the
system turned southeast and moved into northeastern Australia the next day.
Barry intensified rapidly and reached a peak intensity of 85 kt as it was
making landfall. The storm weakened slowly over land and dissipated on 7
January.

There are no observations available near the system center, and there are
no reports of damage or casualties at this time.
