The screencast software is called recordMyDesktop [1]. It should be
available in the Ubuntu and Debian package repositories. The graphical
interface to recordMyDesktop is much easier to use than the command
line interface. I used the GUI gtk-recordMyDesktop under Debian 5.

recordMyDesktop only uses open file formats. To play .ogg and .ogv
files, you could use a Mac OS X dmg for VLC. Check out the VLC
homepage.
You can get the components for OS X to support .ogg and .ogv. I'm not
sure if they're included in Perian (which is highly recommended for OS
X users).
VLC will definitely work, though.
