Hey,

Check out this thread on the pythonireland group.
http://groups.google.ie/group/pythonireland/browse_thread/thread/07bb8f6c7136f8df?hl=en

Looks like Kevin, Anna and myself will be amongst the speakers at the
next pythonireland meetup.
Kevin will be talking about cloudware options options for python
(particularly AWS and GAE), I'll be talking about my experiences
building longurlplease on GAE, and Anna is gonna talk about her
project Surpass (https://rubyforge.org/projects/surpass/),
specifically about converting a python library (xlwt - http://pypi.python.org/pypi/xlwt
in this case) - to ruby.

It'd be a great opportunity for other ruby_ireland members to meet up
with some pythonireland peeps!

Hope to see you there.

Darragh

Hi guys,

To save you trawling through that long thread... :-)

What we're now billing as a joint Python/Ruby Ireland event will take
place in /The Vaults/ at 7pm on March 11th. (A room has been
reserved.)

My presentation will be an introduction to cloud-based computing--with
examples in Ruby and Python.

Clearly, App Engine is Python-only for now, but it's certainly worth
learning about too, as Darragh will tell you.

Google will launch an as yet unnamed language on App Engine in the
next month or so. It's rumoured to be Java, but even if it is, Ruby
looks set to follow.

Hope you can make it!

Kevin.

Hi guys,

Ana's proposal of a talk on Surpass (for Ruby) and XLWT (for Python)
tipped the upcoming event into being a joint Python/Ruby Ireland
outing.

Since most of you won't go thro' the long thread on "Python Ireland",
I'm re-posting a message here, which I sent to Python Ireland a few
days ago.

/Ruby Ireland/ can be the "host" for a joint event at a later date, if
we arrange a suitable venue and have the right mix of talks.

Kevin.

Subject: March Meetup & Python Ireland tees
To: Python Ireland

Hi all,

I talked with Vishal and with Steve Quinlan at /Twestival/ about the
idea of a joint event for /Python Ireland/ and /Ruby Ireland/. I also
asked the guys at the last Ruby meetup and they said they'd be
interested.

If we pick a suitable topic for a talk, we can invite Rubyists to attend too.
(If it's on a Wednesday, /Python Ireland/ is effectively the "host"
for the event.)

Topics like code-editors or source-code control in Git (recently
discussed at Python & Ruby events) would be ideal areas of common
interest.

Another way to reach both audiences would be to show code-examples
alternately in Python & Ruby, when speaking on a subject.

The worst way to approach it is to stoke rivalries. Let's /not/ do
shoot-outs, competitions, or other kinds of sublimated warfare! Both
languages are on the rise, both have healthy, devoted communities,
etc. Let's build on the common ground.

It doesn't have to be this month; if someone has wants to speak on a
topic that's purely related to Python, we can do it another time. I
think it's good to have a neutral venue, at least for the first
encounter, rather than invite Rubyists into a Python software house.

Ciao,

Kevin.

Hi all,

Does anyone else have any ideas for another talk that's
language-neutral; or for which you'd be prepared to do examples in
Ruby and Python?

It could be as short as a lightning-talk of five minutes, or longer.

The current event details are here:
http://wiki.python.ie/moin.cgi/PythonMeetup/March2009

Note this line at the top:
"This is a joint Python/Ruby Ireland event."

I'll post the event to "RubyIreland" on Twitter.

Also, if you know someone in a company which would be prepared to
sponsor the event (to pay for food), please get in touch!

Regards,

Kevin.
