What is Ruby Rumble Practice?
It's an event where rubyists gather in one location to build cool stuff.

When is it?
May 28, 2011. Saturday. Morning until evening.

Where?
We're still looking for a venue. Reply here if you have a suggestion.

What are the rules?
We will form into groups to build a web application. Any ruby framework can be used.

What if I don't have a group?
Go to the monthly meetup on May 19 and join the other groups or create your own.

What is the prize?
This is not a competition.

What if I can't join you in the venue?
You can still participate. Gather the other rubyists in your area. We'll hang out in IRC.

I'm up for this!

Also, Jason Ong sent me this a while ago. http://shdh.sg - I like the
idea that it's an overnight hacking affair!

Topher,

I think it's much better if we do something similar to this?

http://startupweekend.org/

http://startupweekend.org/about/

Thoughts? I really like the target outcome better.

I think we can have both kinds.  Ruby Rumble Practice can just be that - a practice.  We can group experienced people and novices together, and build something.  No pressure with actual code outcome, it will be more of a learning session.

With Startup Weekend, I think we will want people at a certain minimum skill level already, as you are working on actual business ideas.  We can also invite those with entrepreneurial ideas but are not developers and are looking for possible developer partners.

Just my thoughts =)

By the way, for May 28 can I join in the afternoon as I'm not available until around 3.  Just want to be with other Rubyists I can consult as I work on my own project.  It's not a web app though - based on a small oDesk job which involved moving data from a PHP application to a new RoR one I'm working on a simple open source configurable data migrator using the sequel gem (project name suggestions very much welcome =) ).

We can do something similar to startupweekend next time. They are longer (54 hours). Let's see how Ruby Rumble Practice goes first. For the startupweekend, we should team up with other user groups since the technology is not limited to ruby.

Doing this May 28 as initially suggested (one weekday, morning to
evening) does not preclude doing a startupweekend next time. In fact,
we can look at it as a prototype event - we'll use it to get a feel of
the activity, as organizers and participants, while keeping costs low
by spending just one weekend on it.

Actually, those who want to do so can join ala startupweekend
participants. We'll form teams on the May 19 meetup. Some teams who
have time can do planning, design, and even coding *prior* to May 28.
Those who don't, well, just come up in May 28 and execute on that day.

My objectives for this activity are:
1. We get to code together, even for just one day
2. We get to code together as teams. These teams can later on join a
startupweekend activity, or a Rails Rumble
3. We get to build something
4. We get a feel of joining and organizing events like these. The
experience will be useful when we organize a RailsCamp or a
startupweekend.

Much easier to focus on a technology stack and do a Rails Rumble. Build a party around it.

How about a RDRR? Get all the RDRC participants. :)
