Could some of you give me some advice regarding windsurfing in Aruba or
other Caribbean islands?
I am trying to plane a vacation sometimes in the second part of December and
I would like to know which are the best spots. I will be traveling with my
wife and 5 year old....
Thank you for your help,
Stefano
Does your wife windsurf? (I'll assume your 5 year old does not, although it's
possible). Purely to keep peace and quiet within the family group, I'd suggest
Auruba. It has more other activities available to non-windsurfers than Bonaire
does. (If your wife/child like diving/snorkeling, it's a whole different story.)
The WS facilites are different, but comparable as to enjoyment and what you can do.
Bonair is almost purely on-shore wind, (east end of the island) while Aruba has
mostly off-shore winds (SW part of the island). Aruba/Fisherman's huts has a larger
total shallow area, but the shallow area of Bonaire/Lac Bay is very shallow... you
can beach-start all day. There are numerous resorts where you can walk to WS at
Aruba, but none at Bonair (unless you count the "Clothing Optional" resort next
door. Bonaire is more like a small european village atomsphere, while Aruba is more
like an American resort city. Both places have multiple WS outfitters...
That should get you started..

December is early in the season , so it will be hit or miss for the
wind. Margarita Island is probably your best bet for good wind, but
even it can be iffy that time of year. Some years it is great, other
years not so good. So choose an island with plenty of other stuff to
do.
Contrary to popular belief, there is a TON of stuff to do on Margarita.
We have 2 water parks, (one of them being a Venezuelan theme park), a
very nice Maritime Museum, La Restinga National park, (Venezuelans
version of the Florida everglades) 3 spanish forts to visit, an
amusement park where you can also swim with the dolpins, Botanical
gardens, Historic churches, lots of shopping, 2 multiplex theatres,
and dozens of beaches, each with their own ambiance. Not to mention
the opportunity to travel to Angel Falls, the Orinocco Delta, Coche
Island, dving at Las Frailles, Los Roques, etc, etc. Plus beer and
rum is very cheap, with gasoline even cheaper (less than 15
cents/gallon.)
Have fun wherever you decide. to go!!
