Why don't VHS/S-VHS editors have some audio features that would make
the audio side of editing easier???
I use the Pansonic AG-1830/AG-1960/AG-A95 VHS/S-VHS gear for off-line
and some real low end on-line work. Two AUDIO features would make the
productions much easier to edit, and allow me to turn out a nicer
piece:
1. Live audio during all tape movement modes...makes editing audio
much easier.
2. Linear stereo (with dolby) that would allow editing or dubbing to
either track. (Hi-Fi is nice for the movies or for acquisition, but
you can't edit it. If you want to lay in Hi-Fi music in a finished
piece, another generational pass is needed...bad news.)
For those who have used 3/4" or higher formats for editing, the value
of these audio features is evident. I know the high-end VHS/S-VHS
editors made by Panasonic and JVC have these, but why not ALL
VHS/S-VHS editors? The high-end editors are $4500 give or take.
Any one know of any plans by Panasonic or JVC to include features like
this in any of their "prosumer" gear? It can't be that hard to take
the AG-1960 and defeat the audio mute during jog forward or reverse,
and provide linear stereo with dolby. I can't believe the hardware is
that big a deal. Are they afraid of the market effects on their other
gear?
Comments anyone?
Well, just what the doctor ordered. Two weeks ago I got a brochure from
the Carlson-Strand Co. (PO Box 3761, San Clemente, CA 92672, 714-492-8978)
who sell a box that connects to your decks to unmute the audio, for $150.
They also have a $250 box that adds another track that may well do what
you want (I didn't quite need or understand this product, so I ignored
it). I don't know how good their stuff is, but that's the only source I
know.
Alternatively, you could try buying a service manual and seeing if
you could figure out what to do...
