I just bought some tapes from WalMart, and one of them was Total Recall
for $7.95. It looked like every other tape there.

I looked at the tape, and it looked extremely short. Didn't even fill up
half the case. Huh?

Started watching, and the picture was horrible. I glanced down and the
movie was in EP! Why?!?!?!

I'm obviously going to return it, but how can I tell if a tape is a cheap
copy, rather than the "regular" version? The label on this tape even
looked cheap - certainly not the original release label.

Not only this, but the second tape I put in (Glory) went CLUNK in my VCR
and got stuck. I just spent 2 hours taking it apart to get it out.

My advice: don't buy cheap tapes and try to know what you're buying!

1. Says "EP," or "Extended Play" on the box.
2. Box has words "For best results, adjust tracking on your VCR."
3. Weight (pick up an SP tape and compare it to an EP tape).
4. A distributor other than the releasing studio.
5. Low cost, like 50% less then the competition.
6. Wal-Mart. They do that with a lot of tapes!

Good advice!

It's even harder to tell with Kids tapes, since they're usually
around 30 minutes long and mostly sell for $10. I bought a
Richard Scarry Busy Town video, which did not contain any reference to EP
(or Quality EP, QEP as they like to call it). When I returned it,
I got a little hastle since I admitted that I'm only returning it
because of the quality of the EP picture.

I buy all my movies on Laserdisc, but the vast majority of kids titles
are only available on videotape (Very Hungry Catepillar, Sesame Street,
Spot, Barney, etc).

Isn't this the answer to your own question? Pre-recorded tapes from
the original copyright owner specifically state on the box how they
are recorded and they don't look 'cheap'. I'm surprised that Walmart
would sell what sounds like a 'pirated' tape.

I bought a very offical looking Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
from the local Best Buy on sale for $3.99. I too started watching it
and it was a very poor recording, poorer than the EP copy I had
made from cable. I then noticed the "Recorded in EP" on the box.
I returned it too!

But this tape wasn't a bootleg as far as I could tell. It had
all the copyrights, etc., and had sharp and clear graphics
on the package. But what a horrible recording! All of my
many VHS EP recording were VERY superior.

Of course these are my opinions! Alcatel wouldn't want them.

Sorry, I disagree.

There are two factors here:

1. This tape is only $8 retail.
What do you expect? Besides,
2. Wal-Mart has a money-back guarantee, don't they?

I'm convinced this is a mass produced economy studio tape, not a
bootleg.
