Hello all!
Well, I'll try to be unbiased here......not even a Van Vader
moonsault could have saved this one! A DUD from head to toe. First
they announce the Pillman injury and show an interview with the Blonds
where they say that there will not be a title match tonight, then they
come back to Tony and he says that Steve Regal will substitute and there
*will* be a title match -- what was the point of showing the Blonds
interview in the first place? So the Horsemen take the belts. yawn #1
Since Regal was in the tag match, Bobby Eaton takes on Too Cold.
Bobby really took some shots to the face in this one! I'm pretty sure I
saw some swelling around his eye. Too Cold with the pin.
Johnny B. Badd vs. Maxx Payne. I'm sorry but there's no way
Badd should have won this match. Then he gets Norma Jean and makes a
comment about '...I know how much this means to you Maxx...' and then
does nothing! Not one shot into the pole with it. He makes a big
announcement and says that he is going to unmask on this Saturday's WCW
Saturday night. ....wait a second while I set my VCR..... Sure kinda
blows the whole idea of the Mask vs. Guitar setup for the match huh?

Flair for the Gold. I was hoping this was *finally* going to be
the Rude/Flair showdown I'd heard about. (could someone fill me in as to
when that is supposed to be?) Nope. Sting and Bulldog. Okay, no
problem. Sid Vicious comes out w/Harlem Heat (is this the first
appearance from Sid since Beach Blast or did I miss something? Is it
softball season already???) and starts asking about the mystery partner
for War Games....nothing like using the 'mystery partner' skit twice in
one night eh? Anyway, Sting announces that the partner is.....
THE SHOCKMASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A flash goes off and who should come *TRIPPING* through the paper wall
complete with an old Stormtrooper (from Star Wars) helmet with Elmer's
glue and silver glitter on it and a set of silk black curtains imitating
a robe draped (get it --> curtains:'draped'?) around him?.....It's
TYPHOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I mention the fact that his mask/helmet
fell off when he tripped thru the wall and he scrambled to get it back
on his head? Then, even worse.......Ole "I'm using the same voice that
I used for the highly successful Black Scorpion angle" Anderson does a
voice over for the Shockmaster taunting Sid.
O MY GOD WAS THIS LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's see, what was next.....Oh, I think I missed the TV title
match with Orndorff/Steamboat. I think they told these guys to work
their asses off, because that's what they did! Especially Orndorff.
They had some lighting problems during this match so they wrestled with
some shadows in the ring. Production Quality! (Yeah, I know it's live,
but so are all the PPV's) This was the best match of the night (not
saying much, but this match was very good). My only complaint was they
overkilled on the 2-counts (like 6 straight in a row without any moves
in between) and the ending pin was poorly done. They made up for it
after the match though with Orndorff piledriving Steamboat onto the belt
on the ramp! Cool!
Do you guys think the crowd could've been any more passive for this
card?
Flair/Sting vs. Kongs. OH, GOD! Big pop (about the only one
of the night) for the faces. This match lasted about 5 minutes
(estimated - might have been less) and saw Sting *bodyslam* both Kongs
in the first 10 seconds of the match. Flair was *NEVER TAGGED IN*
although he did get some shots on the outside and Sting pinned the guy
in the ring with a dive from the top rope. Flair makes some comment
after the match about "....Sting not needing any help tonight...I was
just here to make sure that Harley Race kept his nose out of his
business..." <---- Excuse me, but wasn't it FLAIR who asked Sting to
take this match with him? Yawn #3
Animal pulls up in the Z28! (wonder how that driver seat looks
considering he was wearing his spiked shoulder pads!) At last,
something interesting!!! I'm thinking that they lured Animal in despite
the whole insurance thing because they couldn't get Hawk. Wrong! Hawk
appears out of nowhere on the other side of the ring and we have a
match. I was excited. Until Rude tagged in the Equalizer. Say what
you will about Hogan, Warrior, Undertaker, etc. (except maybe Gonzales).
This guy is the ABSOLUTE WORST!!! Not even the Road Warriors could have
saved this one. This guy's been around for weeks and weeks and weeks.
Couldn't someone have showed him *SOMETHING*? Especially since he was
involved in probably the only angle they have actually been pushing?!?
DUD DUD DUD DUD DUD. Yawn #4
Main event. Bulldog vs. Vader. Fairly decent crowd response
(at least at the beginning). This was good, I thought. No real stiff
shots like were expected. Some good moves (power) by both. Terrible
ending. Yes, it's been pulled a thousand times in wrestling, but they
just did it poorly. Vader is up on the ropes and does a dive onto a
standing Davey Boy, who catches him and powerslams him. Vaders feet hit
the ref on the way down and knocks him out as Davey Boy lays on top of
Vader for a 10 count. Davey picks up Vader for a vertical suplex and
Race comes in to knock out the knee resulting in Vader landing on top
while the ref recovers for the pin. Lame. Someone should put Race out
to pasture. He can't do anything right. His interviews are absolutely
terrible, and his interference sucks too. I can't believe he used to be
'the man'. Then to top it all off (with 10 seconds left in the show of
course) the fans start cheering and Vader goes out to the ramp to meet a
charging
CACTUS JACK!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack lands on top and gets like 5 hits in before Vader reverses and
exits off the ramp. We get 2 "BANG-BANG"s and fade out. LAME
L A M E !
For the first appearance back, he should've come out with the coal
shovel and knocked the shit out of Vader (and Race), and ended the show
with the crowd going absolutely nuts. Or at least have him beat the
shit out of both of them and have Yoshi come down and do something
devastating (if he can), giving everyone a chance to escape, thus
setting up the upcoming Vader/Kwan match at War Games..
L A M E !
BTW, does anyone else forsee Kwan's nervehold on Jack having little or
no effect because of the "nerve damage caused by Van Vader's powerbomb
on the floor leaving Cactus no feeling in his back/neck"?

The point of showing the interview was that the fans at home could go
"Aw, shit, we're gonna get screwed. We aren't getting a title match.
Those nasty Blonds." Just after saying that, the fans are told that
WCW has demanded a title match no matter what. Yay, WCW! That'll
teach them Blonds. I think that was the idea. ;-)
Curtis and I watched this together and were wondering about the
possibilities of bringing Gentleman Chris Adams to team with Regal
(you know, The Lord & The Gentleman, one from Liverpool, one from
Blackpool). Now there'd be reason for them to feud with the Blonds
and maybe even turn the Blonds face. Curtis didn't like the idea.

By this time Gary had arrived, and the three of us were howling so hard
with laughter that we were in tears. After the show, we watched the
fall a couple of times, even frame by frame.

Actually, we thought that they dimmed the house lights on purpose
like they used to do in the old days. Gary likes the lights all
the way down, so that you can't even see there's an audience. We
complained when they turned the lights back up a notch or two.
The UWFi TV shows I've seen have the lights turned down too.

Actually, we wondered if they had prompters in the crowd somewhere.
The crowd seemed pretty alive to us throughout the show. At times
we couldn't understand why they were so alive.

Flair said in his "please let me tag with you" interview that Sting
could handle both Kongs by himself. I hope that they are finally
going to put Sting over big. He's one of the best wrestlers in the
big two (I'm careful to phrase things that way so that I don't
ruffle any feathers).

He's brutal alright. I guess Hogan & Warrior have stood out as
being bad because their push to the lead face in their promotion
has not been warranted by their skill. Equalizer will never get
pushed to the World title, so in one way, Hogan & Warrior are
worse because of positioning. Undertaker is easily at the same
level as Equalizer and might even be below him on ablility (which
is admittedly hindered due to his gimmick). I'd rather watch
neither of UT or Equalizer, but if I was forced into a choice
I don't think UT would be it.

Don't forget that this show was on (basically) free TV. That said,
it's certainly reasonable for them to leave things hanging to draw
people in to their TV show on Saturday, or to promote things that
will be on TV on Saturday. That's what they did or, in many case,
tried to do. Consider:
- Why should Johnny B. Badd do something with Maxx's guitar right
away when they can play up on TV what he's going to do with it?
- Badd saying he'll unmask might get some people to tune in on
Saturday.
- Sting vs. Flair might get some people to tune in on Saturday.
- Details on Cactus Jack might get some people to tune in on
Saturday.
- More details about the War Games PPV might get some people to
tune in on Saturday.
Sure, some of those things might not get people to watch on
Saturay, but some will. It's not a bad idea. Yes, the wrestling
was substandard for WCW, with only two ***1/2 and a lot of stuff
that was mostly dreck, so I was a little disappointed, but it
was still better than WrestleMania or Royal Rumble, although
probably the worst WCW show from a wrestling standpoint this
year. Unfortunately, as WCW brings in "talented" newcomers
like Equalizer, Kongs, Shit^H^H^H^HShockmaster, etc., things
will go down from a wrestling standpoint. Sigh.
Still, you shouldn't expect the same thing from a free TV special
as you do from a PPV.

I hereby add my name to the list of people who, after the show was over,
watched this over and over again. I didn't know whether to laugh, feel
embarrassed for myself and all wrestling fans, or feel sorry for WCW.
Eventually I gave up, and just laughed my ass off.
At first, I thought the Shockmaster looked too slim to be Tugboat... then
a couple of his familiar gestures gave him away. And I noticed that the
apparent slimness was just an illusion due to the hugeness of the drapery
he was wearing.

Whatever the WCW folks fed that crowd before the show, I want some... they
were absolutely livid, and for no good reason. Most of the show was lame.
I was also stunned that the placed looked absolutely packed. How many people
there were pulled right off the street, I wonder?

Actually, I wouldn't be too surprised if the reason Sting falls just a bit
short this Saturday night is given to be the effort he had to expend in
handling both Kongs by himself. While Flair rested never tagged in. Kind
of a lame idea, I know, but this _is_ WCW...

Like just who those two guys with Sid were?? I've never seen them on WCW
TV before (not that I watch every availabe minute)... if I didn't get all
the info here, I would have been lost.

No, *you* were wondering about the possibilities. I was trying to
ignore you. Honestly, Gentleman Chris and Lord Regal? Puh-leez!
I may agree that Adams would make a great addition to WCW, but
keep him the hell away from that "appalling" Lord Regal. Regal
can stick to his bloody crumpets.

I had trouble enough catching my breath watching it at Herb's.
And Jesse's comments were truly inspired!

Add me to the list of people who like the lights dimmed. Adds that
much more "class" to the match (if that word can be used to describe
pro wrestling). Maple Leaf Gardens and Copps Coliseum do it, and it
looks good.

Gotta love his debut. Starts off the match, and his very first televised
move ever the stiff throat slams Tommy Tandem??? onto his head, nearly
breaking the guy's neck. That's not bad enough, the goofball is too
stupid to let the injured guy tag out, so he beats on his some more (on
his head and neck, yet!). This kind of stupid oaf is the last thing WCW
needs (or any wrestling org, for that matter).

Watching the Porkmeister's entrance was truly hilarious. At the same
time, all of the deragatory comments I ever heard about wrestling went
coursing through my mind.
If WCW has half a brain, and if you add up the collective IQ of every
moron involved in runnung the company they just might, they will dump the
Shockster gimmick and reintroduce Buffoon as something else.

I am also one who likes the hose lights dimmed. With just the ring
lighted the match seems more important and easier to follow.
