Today's Brisbane Sunday Rag has an interview with Symonds in it in which he
sez that the source of the 'Roy' nick was an early cricket coach in Briz.
Said coach christened him 'Leroy' after the Brisbane Bullets basketballer
Leroy Loggins. This had too many syllables in it for an Australian
cricketer and was duly abbreviated to his current nick. There you go.

Thanks alvey. I was actually having this continuing discussion with my Dad
yesterday (who listens to cricket on ABC all day), and he had no idea where
the nickname came from either. Thanks for saving me from buying The Sunday
Mail also :) only ever read about 2 pages of it.

I give up. Which two pages do you read?

Sleep well? not me.

I still wanna know why he uses about 20 tubes of zinc every match. even
after failing with the bat during they day, he still feels the need to
protect his lips from the UV light from the towers during the night
sessions.

Given that he wears zinc even while batting under lights, I'll opt for
the more likely answer that it is a superstition.

That doesn't make it look any less stupid, though :)

I wonder if he'll wear it to the night clubs in RSA?

There is actually an upside to it.

It means that I can convince my son to wear cream when he's playing and
tell him that he looks like Andy Symonds.

And it was very hot for their game on Saturday. Currently I'm trying to
convince him to wear his shirt collar up, just like Gary Sobers.

'Who's Gary Sobers, Dad?'

'He's the guy who hit 6 sixes off an over' (I actually have a grainy
vid of that, so he thought that was cool

Maybe you should push the Greg Matthews collar up & hat on bowling?

Speaking of whom,

I bumped into him as he was getting off the bus yesterday. That hair
may be thick, but it's all grey. Likewise the 3 day growth. I thought
it was a familiar-looking hobo.

yeah yeah

Bus driving pays better than cleaning toilets?

From what I've heard from bus drivers I think you probably deal with
more shits as a bus driver than a toilet cleaner.
